Howard's nicknames were Howie and Staff.
Howard died at home in MN. He was sitting in a kitchen chair and suddenly dropped off the chair on to the floor. He apparently died instantly. He was buried at the military cemetery at Fort Snelling, MN. Howard h
ad served in the Combat Engineers in Europe during WW II. He had been a postal delivery man in Columbia Heights, MN, for most of his life after leaving the service after the war.
All of the children of Claude and Laura Stafford attended many schools. They moved frequently. Howard was the first born. He was born at home in Anoka, Minn. He attended schools in Anoka, Columbia Heights, and Robbinsdale, Minn. as well as in Chicago, Ill for a short time. Howard graduated from Robbinsdale High School in 1940.
Howard was in the army during World War II. He had basic training in Fort Lewis, Wash. He spent some time in an Army Air Force training program but the army cut back the number of cadets to be trained in about 1943 and Howard was transferred into a Combat Engineers unit in the 69th Infantry Division. He met a beautiful young lady with auburn hair while in St. Louis. He fell madly in love with her immediately and they were married before he was sent overseas.
Howard was in advanced training in the 69th Division in Camp Shelby, Miss. before the unit was sent to Europe. A short time before his unit was shipped out, his brother Milton was also sent to Camp Shelby for advanced training with the 65th Infantry Division. They were only able to get together once during the brief perion while they were both in the same camp.
Howard was a postman most of his life after returning home from the army afterWorld War II. He built his own home on the same few acres that his fa
ther and mother lived. He had also helped build their house before he we
nt into the service. Howard had some health problems. He had severe ulcerated vericose veins in his legs, and had to retire early from the Postal Service. Howard died suddenly of a heart attack while at home in 19??. He was buried in the Fort Snelling Military Hospital Near Minneapolis.
