The will of Jarvis' father, JAMES Stafford who died in 1771 Dorchester Co., MD provides:
Item: I give unto my son Jarius (Jarvis?) Safford and his heirs my Plantation where William Harp_ is now living upon and all the Land belonging to the track as the Plantation is upon an ____ called by the name of "Saffords Venture" upon the consideration of paying the Executrick five pounds current and noe more of my Estate neither personally or real.

Caroline County was created in 1773 from Dorchester and Queen Anne's counties. I believe Jarvis' family lived in that part of Dorchester which was split off to for Caroline County.

* Note: History of Ross and Highland Counties, Ohio: Williams Brothers, p. 493 "During the same year [1805] came a party of men from near Dobsons Cross Roads, North Carolina, and settled in the township. They were all of the Friends' denomination, and from the beginnings made by them may be traced the great influence always exerted by that sect in Penn. The party was composed of William Williams, James and Jacob Griffin, Jarvis Stafford and his sons, Shadrach, James and Jonas, John Matthews, and Alexander Starr, with their families. . . .Matthews and the Staffords were, at first, uncertain as to their location, and camped for nearly a month at a spring west of and near the present village of Samantha."

From Brenda Alward ([email protected])- 6/20/2005:
I descend from Jarvis and Rebeckah (Rebecca) Stafford, though their daughter Tacy. She married Zachariah Hodson. One of their children, John Hodson, migrated to southern Shelby County, Illinois and bought public domain land in 1836. This land is still in our family. I have been to the Hodson cemetery in Fountain County, Indiana and can give you more information regarding this line of Stafford/Hodson's if you'd like.
I know that Jarvis Stafford moved from Maryland to Guilford County, North Carolina sometime in 1780 or 1781 and was there for the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in 1781. I know he appears prior to that (1778) in Choptank Hundred, Caroline County, Maryland. In 1790 he is in Cheraw District, South Carolina and another census (1800?) has him in Marlboro County, S.C. (I don't think he moved, I think the boudaries
did)(Marlboro County is about 85 miles south of Guilford County, N.C.).
In around 1804/1805, he and his family migrated to southwestern Ohio, Highland County, settling just north of Hillsboro, near Samantha in
Liberty Township. He died there in 1812. I have been to Ohio and found some good information there. I know that his daughter Tacy (possibly named after her uncle Trice??) married Zachariah Hodgson (they dropped the G and became Hodson in Ohio) on April 8, 1810 and together with other Stafford family members, moved on into Fountain County, Indiana around 1828. By this time, they were no longer Quaker's. They were disowned for marrying out of unity. Zachariah had been married to Catherine Hunt, but she died, probably in childbirth. Tacy's brother's John and James moved there after Rebecca died. I have been to Fountain County and just north of Newtown, there is a Hodson cemetery with Tacy, Zachariah and some other family members there. In the larger Newtown cemetery, there are many others, with surnames such as Insley, Harvey, Cook and Kiff, being married names of Tacy's sisters.
I know that Shadrach Stafford, one of Jarvis' sons, grown and married with children of his own, moved to Ohio along with the other family
members. He and his family also settled just outside Hillsboro and became quite a respected citizen, owning a mill. He built the first
brick house in Highland County in 1825. Stafford's Mill also operated a linseed oil factory. Shadrach was a Quaker, but both his wives were Methodists
