BIOGRAPHY by an unknown descendant, found at One World Tree, 03-2006
Clifton was living in Camp Twnshp, Polk County, Iowa with his grandfather, John McDannel, when the 1880 census was taken. Clifton (C.B.) and his wife Lucy lived in Polk County, Iowa when 1900 census was taken.
Harold Stafford Jr. gave me the information that our grandfather, Clifton, used to repair engines - poured "lead bearings" etc. My sister, Lorraine Holman, indicated that he was an accomplished boat builder. She said that he made "cedar strip fishing boats".
Clifton was close friends with Hans Ferkingstad when they both were farming in the Constance, Minn. area. Later, Hans' two daughters, Laura and Selma, married Clifton's two sons, Claude, and Harold.
Clifton was a talented and intelligent fellow, but he had one problem. He was an alcoholic. He neglected his farm and went on binges and would
n't come home until he had spent all his money. As a result his wife and his oldest son, Claude, had to try to keep the farm going in his absence. Claude had to drop out of school after about four years in grade school to help his mother.
At some stage, Clifton was able to straighten out his life. He went to Chicago and obtained a job with the Kester Solder Co. where he worked his way up to a management position.
Clifton's first wife, Lucy, contracted cancer while in her 40's. After a lingering painful illness she died in 1924 in Red Wing, Minnesota.
Clifton married his second wife, Pearl, in about 1927. They lived in Chicago on Flournoy Street until Clifton dies in 1932.
