- Possibly another relationship.
Greetings, Randall -
I am a researcher for a friend who has a Stafford ancestor, Harriet Stafford, b. 1837-8 in Indiana. She married John W. Hittle in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, on December 24, 1857. She died after 1920 and before 1925 in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa.
According to the Stafford Society, Harriet Hittle was the daughter of Presley Stafford which I believe is incorrect.
I am going to forward you some information on Harriet Stafford and her extended Stafford family that settled in Woodbury and Plymouth Counties of Iowa. There is extensive information on them in the History of Woodbury and Plymouth Counties. In it, Harriet Stafford Hittle says that she came to Iowa with her uncle, Zeph Stafford, and that her parents died when she was quite young.
From the information in this history book, my hypothesis is that Harriet Stafford is not the child of Presley Stafford and Sarah “Sally” Mowery. I'd like to suggest that she is the child of Presley's brother, Simpson Stafford, who appeared in the 1840 census with his wife and daughter under five years of age. Simpson Stafford and his wife, Margaret Mansfield (or Maxfield) disappear from the 1850 Greene County, Indiana, census (which leads me to believe that they are the parents who died), and Harriet Stafford appears with whom I think are her uncle and aunt, Presley Stafford and Sarah Sally Mowery in 1850 in Greene County, Indiana.
By 1855, she is in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa (contiguous to Plymouth County, Iowa) where Zephaniah Stafford and his brothers and mother, Permelia Stafford live. Even though Zephaniah is 10 years older than Harriet Stafford, he is actually her cousin, not her uncle.
Further, Presley Stafford and Sarah Sally Mowery appear in census records in 1850 and 1860 in Indiana, so obviously, they did not die.
I'd probably also posit that Levi Stafford is a sibling of Harriet Stafford, also born to Simpson Stafford and Margaret Mansfield (or Maxfield).
I will forward you the information I have gleaned on this part of the Stafford family from Woodbury and Plymouth County, Iowa.
Sincerely,
Kathryn Dooley Holtze
