James William Stafford Sr., 82, of Radford, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1993, at his home.
Born Feb. 1, 1911 in Radford, he was the son of the late James and Sallie Stafford.
He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
He was a life long member of the First Baptist Church, serving faithfully in many positions in both the Church and Sunday School. He was a member of the choir for over 52 years. He was a Deacon Emeritus and on the Board of Trustee. He began employment as a clerk in the Radford Post Office in 1939 and retired after 33 years of service, the last ten years being in the position of postmaster.
He served on the Radford School Board with outstanding service from 1948-1960. During his time on the board, he was chairman and during this time the two new schools: were built, Belle Heth and McHarg. He was a member of the Va. May Masonic Lodge #38 AF & AM for 54 years, receiving his 50 year pin in 1989. He was Master of the Lodge in 1945. He was a member of Radford Fire Dept. and served as treasurer for many years. He was treasurer of the Radford Health Council. He was an active member of the Radford Rotary Club, receiving the Paul Harris Fellow. He was active in the Democratic party and treasurer.
Surviving are his wife, Louise W. Stafford of Radford; one son, James William Stafford Jr. of Radford, one daughter, Ann S. Sutton of Radford; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Rock of Portsmouth, Ohio; one grandson and a step-grandson.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church; Radford; with Rev. Joe Burton, Rev. Will Robbins and Dr. Charles Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Sunrise Burial Park, Radford, where members of the Va. May Masonic Lodge will conduct graveside rites. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the First Baptist Church Music Ministry. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home, Radford. Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home, Radford, is in charge of arrangements.
