• Notes

  Mary Ellen Stafford was the great-great-granddaughter of James Stafford, the first Stafford in Monongalia County, VA. He was born in 1754 and fought in the Revolutionary War. During the years following the war, he acquired over 1,000 acres of land in Monongalia County. Mary Ellen's parents were William and Maria Irwin (or Ervin) Stafford. When Mary Ellen was only two years old, her father died of smallpox, on March 20, 1855. Her mother remarried, to Thomas Emberson, who treated Mary Ellen and her sister, Martha, as his own. Although the date of his death is unknown, Thomas was in the Civil War. He was still with his family in the 1860 Census but, by the time of the 1870 Census, Maria was again a widow. In early 1871, Mary Ellen married James Quinter Johnson, son of Richard and Minerva Colebank Johnson. They had 11 known children, all but one of whom lived to adulthood. My mother, Mary Ellen's granddaughter, remembers her as a "tiny" woman who always moved very quickly and was a very serious, hardworking and capable woman.
