Funeral services for Edward Coleman Stafford were Saturday, May 14, at 1:30 p.m. in the Burlington Gospel Chapel. Song selections were "Blessed Assurance" and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee." Soloists were Elizabeth Lightfoot and Dwaine Johnson. The organist was Elna Johnson. Casket bearers were Ed Dowd, Kenneth Keeler, Roy Clark, Harold Stafford Jr., Rod Scheierman and Socks Armknecht. Interment was in the Wray Cemetery. Hendricks Moruary was in charge of the arrangements. Edward Stafford was born in 1893 on April 23, in Decatur, Ill., to the late William Nelson Stafford and the former Amelia Anthony Schutt. He passed away at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver on May 11, at the age of 90 Years and 19 days. Ed Stafford came to Hale with his folks where they took out a homestead, at the age of seven. He attended school in a sodhouse school east of Hale and there he grew to manhood where he married Rosetta Custer, and to this union two girls were born. He then farmed around Hale for several years, and then moved to Kansas City, MO., where he ran a streetcar. He then came back to Hale with his wife, the late Berneice Lasco. To this union three children were born, two daughters and a son. For many years he farmed around Stratton and Akron, and then he moved to a town near Little Rock, Ark., where he ran a dairy farm and raised chickens. During the second world war he moved to Frisco, CA., and worked in the shipyards during the duration of the war. He then moved back to Burlington with his wife, the late Nora McKee. They worked at the Montezume Hotel for many years where they eventually retired and bought a home on Lowell Street. Ed Stafford had three brothers and four sisters. One sister and both wifes preceded him in death. He is also survived by five children; Irene Norton, Kansas City, MO.; Margaret Smith of Lebanon, MO; Vida Norton of Hilo, Hawaii; Dorothy Lake of Copperas Cove, TX; and Edward of Grand Juntion, CO. Also 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
