As with every story there is a beginning, a middle and an end except for t he story of Tanglewood Park. Rich in its settlement history, folklore a nd tradition, the Tanglewood story can be experienced as an ongoing, organ ic process.
The property now known as Tanglewood Park was part of land claimed by S ir Walter Raleigh for Queen Elizabeth on March 25, 1584. William Johnso n, an immigrant from Wales was among the earliest European settlers of t he Yadkin River Valley . In 1757, just four years after the Moravian settl ement of the Wachovia Tract, in the nearby communities of Bethabara and Sa lem, Johnson purchased the mile square central portion of the present Tang lewood property from William Linville.
Johnson built a fort overlooking the Yadkin River to protect his family a nd neighbors from attacks during the French and Indian War. He died in 17 67 and is buried on the highest hill on the estate, Mount Pleasant.
In 1809, a simple frame church was erected next to his grave and remains t oday as one of the Park's featureed architectural attractions.
The Johnson heirs sold their property in 1921 to Mr. William Neal Reynold s, brother of tobacco entrepreneur R.J. Reynolds. At that time, the Tangle wood tract was enlarged to encompass over 1,100 acres.
Reynolds renovated and expanded the Manor House into a 28 room showcase. M r. Will, as he was called, bred and raced thoroughbred harness horses a nd established Tanglewood Farm as home to some of the country's finest pac ers. His wife, Kate, a horticultural enthusiast, began extensive native a nd ornamental plantings. Kate employed German master gardener, Mr. Frank L ustig, who adopted her plans as his life work.
In 1951, the Reynolds Family willed the Tanglewood property to the citize ns of Forsyth County, North Carolina to have as a public recreational par k.
The combination of streams, woodlands and grassy pastures, and the traditi ons of architecture, horses, gardening and the wide range of recreation al activities make Tanglewood Park an ideal destination to visit again a nd again.
