- John Bernhart (Barnett , "Barney") Idol (Eitel before 1790)
Landed in Philadelphia, PA Sept. 23, 1752. Moved to NC around 1770 from B ucks Co. PA . Tradition has it that Barney and wife Elizabeth (Meir)and th eir first 5 children came down in wagons with their cows, pigs, chicken s, and 250 pounds cash. Their home was on what was later the old Plank Roa d, which ran between Wachovia Settlement (Winston-Salem) and Cross Creek ( Fayetteville) about 6-7 miles from Salem. They kept a tavern for traveler s.
When Barney died he left his beloved wife Elizabeth, for her lifetime, 2,0 40 acres of land stipulating that all debts be paid first even if land mu st be sold; then to his 8 children, share and share alike. He is list ed as receiving a Revolutionary War pension, although he would have been a dvanced in years during that period.
