Notes |
- William and Mary were possibly married in the Huguenot Church (the only Hu guenot Church in Staten Island) and that Matthias was baptized in that chu rch.
....William's son John was married to Charity Teague, daughter of Willi am Teague who came to the Shepherdstown site from Maryland and he owned co nsiderable land in this overall area of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, t he Frederick County, Virginia.
We had speculated how the family had migrated to this area and we ha ve to point out that the early information we had concerning William and s ome of his descendants, i.e. biographies, etc., all said that he had settl ed in the area of Richmond, Virginia. How this was deduced we do not kn ow for we do not have any references to this effect beyond that just menti oned. On receiving the information of the survey of John's land and the fa ct that Michael had taken part in the survey, we had concluded that Willi am and his family probably migrated across New Jersey, into Pennsylvania a nd then into Virginia, either from the area where Greencastle, Pennsylvan ia is located or possibly further west in the area of Warfordsburg, Pennsy lvania.
We have to remember that William departed Staten Island in 1724 and to tra vel to this area, whether he went through Pennsylvania or on down to Maryl and and then crossed over, we cannot say, but whatever route he and his fa mily took, it was no over-night trip for any of the families making su ch a migration in those times, it was for the most part a wilderness.
We also not have to believe that William and his family were not alo ne on this migration, the last information gives indication of famili es of the same names of families known on Staten Island at that time. O ne prime bit is the reference of a Thomas Stillwell having taken the nam es for the Tax List in Rowan County, NC in 1761 and Michael's name appea rs on that list. Therefore, it gives indication that at least one memb er of the Stillwell Family of Staten Island very well may have accompani ed William and some of the others from Staten Island to this area of th en Frederick County, VA....
