ANSWER from Andrew Winfrey
My father was Andrew J. Winfrey, born in 1898 in Knoxville, TN. His grandf ather was Holmes Warren Winfrey, who left North Carolina and settled in Ro gersville, TN. I know of your work in the Rogersville genealogy book.
I have traveled to and performed extensive research in North Carolina a nd Virginia. I have concluded that Holmes Warren Winfrey was the son of Ha rdin Winfrey who was born in Virginia in 1800 and who settled in Guilfo rd County NC in 1820, and later in Stokes County NC in 1850. Hardin Winfr ey was a millwright who worked on mills including the building which was m ade of a stone foundation and a wood or stone building. He was also an hon orary Colonel in the Civil War because he used his mill to provide gra in to the Confederate Army.
It is interesting to note that Holmes Warren Winfrey built barns at a you ng age when he first arrived in Rogersville, TN. And his son had 8 sons, a ll were stone masons under the company name of Winfrey Brothers in Knoxvil le, TN, that built large stone buildings thoughout the US from 1920 unt il 1960. Winfrey Brothers built the CIA Building in Washington, the City-C ounty Building in Detroit, the Miami Herald Building, and the Will Roge rs Memorial just to name a few.
The stone setting knowledge was passed down from Hardin Winfrey and genera tions before him in Virginia dating back to 1680. There is a famous Winfre y's Mill in Virginia listed in the College of William and Mary history boo ks. The Winfreys came from England in the 1650 to 1680 period. Winfre ys in England in the 1600's and currently are located primarily north of L ondon in the Peterborough area.
If you have any questions, please E-Mail or call me in Lexington, KY. I pl an to visit Knoxville and Rogersville in the near future. Maybe we can me et and exchange notes.
