- Notes for CLYDE STAFFORD:
Clyde's father, Robert, was a horse trader who travelled a round Adams County
until finally settling in Quincy, Illinois. As a young bo y, Clyde attended
Washington School through the second grade. At that tim e, he became ill with
erysipelas and lost both his speech and hearing upon recov ery. Because of
these impairments, he was sent to the State Instituti on in Jacksonville,
Illinois. At the institution, he began to experience prob lems with his vision
and, because it was believed he would eventually be blin d, was returned to
Quincy. Clyde, nevertheless, attempted to seek employmen t, although his
efforts were not often taken seriously. He did work at t he Knillte Show Case
Works and at the Morris Shoe Factory and eventually obtain ed viable employment
at the Emergency Hospital in Davenport, Iowa, in spi te of being turned down
initially. He came to be considered as one of the most va luable attendants
employed at the hospital.
