CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Dr. Eleanor Stafford, 86, died at her home in Chattan ooga on Monday, March 8, 2004. Dr. Stafford was born May 23, 1917, the dau ghter of Herbert Dewitt and Boyd Lowrey Stafford and grew up in Kernersvil le, N.C., where she had been a member of the Main Street United Methodi st Church since 1926.
Dr. Stafford graduated from Salem College in 1938. After graduation, she w orked in the science department of the college. During World War II, she s erved as a medical technician with the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps and work ed in a biochemistry lab at N.C. Baptist Hospital before entering medic al school.
One of only four women in a class of 60, she graduated in 1950 from the Bo wman Gray School of Medicine. After her internship at Grady Memorial Hospi tal in Atlanta, Ga., and serving as chief resident of pediatrics at the Un iversity Hospital in Little Rock, Ark., Dr. Stafford joined Dr. Minn ie R. Vance in the practice of pediatrics in Chattanooga. Dr. Stafford pra cticed medicine in Chattanooga for over 50 years and was still practici ng until just a few weeks before her death.
Beloved for her humor, playful nature and kindness, Dr. Stafford cared f or generations of children from the area. Dr. Stafford was on the sta ff of Erlanger Hospital and served as chief of staff of T.C. Thompson's Ch ildren's Hospital from 1962 to 1963. She was a clinical instructor of pedi atrics with the University of Tennessee and was voted Teacher of the Ye ar by the residents in that program.
She was a member of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Society, the Tenness ee Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the American Acad emy of Pediatrics. She served on several boards, including the board of t he Ronald McDonald House and Kids on the Block.
Dr. Stafford received the Salem College Distinguished Alumna Award in 19 87 in honor of her professional achievements and service to her communit y. In 2001, through her generosity, the Eleanor Stafford Scholarship Fu nd was established at Salem College to support students who demonstrate ne ed and/or merit.
Dr. Stafford was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Stafford; her s ister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth "Liddy" and Charlie Collicut; and h er niece, Cathy Collicut. She is survived by her nephew, Charles Collic ut Jr. of Chapel Hill and his wife, Debbie, and their sons, Charles and An drew; and her niece, Beverly Collicut Foster and her husband, Gary, and th eir sons, Ben and Thomas of Minneapolis, Minn.
As well as being part of a large and loving family in North Carolina, Elea nor Stafford became a cherished member of the Vance family in Chattanoo ga and a beloved godmother to Dan and Minnie Vance's children and their fa milies.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at the Chur ch of the Good Shepherd at Lookout Mountain, and another service will be h eld in Kernersville, N.C., during Easter weekend.
Memorial gifts may be made to the T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital Founda tion in Chattanooga for the establishment of the Eleanor Stafford Pediatr ic Ambulatory Care Center.
