- FINALLY we have found R.L. Havens!! On December 2, 1998, almost 30 years of searching has ended.
He is buried in Ft. Smith, Arkansas in the Oak Cemetery. His grave is located in block 80, lot 8, row 2, grave # 3. Buried next to him is his half sister. Mary Ann (Mollie) Tunnicliff-Deason died 1939, and Mollie's husband buried in the same row, Thomas Deason died 1933.

My mother (Juanita Warren) and myself went to Stillwell in search for info on this elusive grandfather. First we went to the County Court house, mother knew that Jim (the only name the family knew him by) had lived in this area in the 1930's. She can remember her family going there at this time for some reason. There was no record of a "Jim" Havens on file. As mother was describing the location to the person that was helping us, a lady at her desk recognized some of the information. She came over to us and said that this man and a woman had lived accross the road from her family when she was asmall child. So from the fact of knowing where the location of this farm was, we found an R.L. Havens owning land in the old Peavine District of this area. Upon further searching, this R.L. Havens, upon his death had left 1/2 of his land to his son, Alonzo Edward Havens.
FINALLY we had found a bit of information on him. And very much to our surprise, the grandfather that was only known as Jim Havens was this R.L Havens we had discovered, had this lady not overheard our conversation with the man helping us, we would still be looking for a Jim Havens.
The woman who was so helpful to us is Pauline Dowdy Rt. 3, Box 334, Stillwell, Oklahoma. I corresponded with her 2 or 3 times hoping she might remember some little tidbit , but she could not give any further help. She could not remember much more than this, she did say the woman living with him she thought to be Mrs. Havens, and that she wrote articles for the local newspaper. This woman is a mystery. We then went to the newspaper office to check this out, but unsuccesfully. We found no answers there. We did find that the paper at that point in time was called "The Adair County Gleaner".
The documents at the court house told us that R.L. Havens bought 20 acres in the Old Peavine Distrist, from I.A. Schuman of Tulsa, on April 6, 1931. Upon his death April 30, 1936 he left 1/2 to his son L.E. and daughter in law Faye Havens of Porter. Alonzo Edward and Faye sold their part to M.C. Blackburn of Stillwell, June 29, 1936 .
After having a date of death for him we then went to the funeral home, Robert's Funeral Home, of Stillwell. There we discovered a Jim Heavins (husband of Amanda and father of Amanda L. Heavins), with with the wrong date of death, but we did find the R. L. Havens that is our ancestor. This funeral home had transferred his body to Ft. Smith. Arkansas, and I have been able to find no record of his burial place after this in Arkansas. I have written and called many cemetery's in the Ft. Smith area, but no answers as of yet. But this all happended 8 or 9 years ago, and I have not looked since then. There are so many more records available now than there were at this time so maybe my next search will hold the answer.
