The 1910 census shows Josie Q. Wamsley in the household of James Q. Johnso n, her father. Also in the household is Josie's daughter, Evelyn B., a ge 2. The census shows that Josie had been in her present marriage f or 3 years, and gives no indication that she is widowed or divorced. Evel yn Johnson Frankenberry recalls that there was another daughter, Pearl, bo rn prior to Josie's later marriage to Joseph Liston.
Ruth Johnson Navratil provided a copy of Josie's obituary. The newspap er in which it was printed is not identified, but is probably a Morgantow n, WV paper, most likely the Dominion Post. It is as follows:
JOSIE JOHNSON LISTON
Josie Johnson Liston, 83, a former Morgantown resident, died Jan. 5, 197 4, in National City, Calif.
She was born March 1, 1890, in Alverton, Pa., the youngest of 11 childr en born to James Quinter and Mary Ellen Stafford Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph T. Liston; her brother s, Will, Bert, Frank and Lonnie; and by her sisters, Arrie Hennen, Nell ie Vandervort, Alice Maust, Emma Townsend, Eunice Bigson and Libby Johnso n, all of Morgantown.
Surviving are her daughters Pearl Woodall of Reedsville, and Bettie Fawl ey of Arlington, Va.; her sons, James, of Frederick, Md., Paul, of Feder al Way, Wash., and Carol, with whom she made her home in Chula Vista, Cali f.; 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson .
Interment was Jan. 8, in Parris, Calif.
The obituary is in error, in that Josie was not the youngest of the 11 chi ldren; both Eunice and Libby were younger. The obituary would support t he birth of a daughter, Pearl, not listed in the census.
Both the 1910 census and the California Death Index, 1940-1997, show Jos ie as Josie Q. Liston, perhaps Quinter, after her father, James Quinter Jo hnson. The California Death Index shows that she died in San Diego, C A. The obituary indicates that she died in National City, CA. National C ity is in the San Diego area.
Note added 12 July 2005: There is some confusion regarding the marital st atus and the children of Josie Johnson. The 1910 Census shows Josie as ma rried to a Wamsley for 3 years, and she had a 2-year-old daughter, Evel yn B. at that time. A photograph of a gathering of the James Quinter John son family in the summer of 1922 has been reviewed by Evelyn Johnson Frank enberry and identification made of almost all of the people in the photogr aph. She has positively identified Joseph and Josie Johnson Liston, as we ll as Josie's children. She has indicated that Bettie, Pearl, and Carl a re together in the front row of the photograph. However, the boy identifi ed as Carl is clearly quite a bit older than the two girls identified as B ettie and Pearl. A Carl M. Liston has been found in the Social Security D eath Index who fits with other information at hand. His last residence w as in Chula Vista, CA. According to the obituary for Josie Johnson Listo n, at the time of her death, she was living with son, Carl, in Chula Vist a, CA. Further, Carl's Social Security Number, 217-10-0707, was issu ed in the state of Maryland, prior to 1951. Evelyn Johnson Frankenberry h as reported that she remembers that Carl was a singer, and sang in the mid -thirties on a radio station in Maryland. This Carl appears to be the s on of Joseph and Josie. He was born on 22 May 1913, so would be about 9 y ears old at the time of the Johnson family photograph in 1922.
However, the 1910 Census listing Evelyn B. (assumed to be Bettie) Wamsl ey shows that she would have been born in 1908. The child in the 1922 ph otograph identified by Evelyn Johnson Frankenberry as Pearl Wamsley is cle arly younger than the girl identified as Bettie and the boy identifi ed as Carl. Evelyn also recalls that Pearl Wamsley and Evelyn's sister, E lizabeth, were close friends and that they were about the same age. Eliza beth was born in . She is in the 1922 family photograph, and is clearly m uch older than the other children identified as Wamsley and Liston childre n.
Further thinking and research are needed to sort this out.
