3. Stapleton is well documented in the records of Spottsylvania County,
Virginia. He married Sarah DURETT (dau. of John DURETT of Spottsylvania)
who died May 8, 1771. There were numerous mentions of Stapleton in
Spottsylvania County, VA from 1757 through 1788 dealing with land sales,
witness, and other legal actions. On October 2, 1786, he was granted a
total of 1250 acres in two grants in Fayette County, Kentucky. He owned
33 slaves by 1783. Stapleton I died June 17, 1788. The Herndon family
of VA was very close to Stapleton's family and was included in most leg
documents as wittnesses.
Based on information in both John DURETT's and Stapleton's wills,
the children of Stapleton are:
William, d. about 1775-8; m. Feb 1776, Elizabeth Herndon.
Philadelphia, b. 18 Feb 1777; d 13 Oct 1784.

CHARLES B. CRUTCHFIELD is a native of Spottsylvania Co., Va., where he w as born December 27, 1841. His grandfather's wife was Elizabeth L., daught er of Gen. Garrett Minor, of Virginia. In 186,1 he enlisted in Compa ny E, Ninth Virginia Cavalry, in which he served until the end of the wa r. His father, Stapleton, was born in Spottsylvania County, in 1808, and d ied there in 1859. He was the son of Maj. Stapleton Crutchfield, Sr., a so ldier in the war of 1812. Subject's mother, Sarah A., daughter of Maj. Wil liam Alsop, of Spottsylvania County, Va., was born in 1812, and died in 18 50. She was a niece of Gen. Joseph Rogers, and her grandfather served in t he war of 1812. To her and husband were born Corbin, subject, Sallie' W. ( Gatewood), Robert and Barton. Subject was married October 17, 1871, to Mi ss Lucy T., daughter of Col. Elijah G. and Sidney L. (Morrison) Sebre e, of Trenton, Ky., and this union has been favored with three children: A da S., Sidney B. and Edgar M. Mr. Crutchfield is engaged in farming, havi ng 315 acres of first-class land well improved, and in fine culture.
He is a member of the Masonic fraternity; also of the Christian Church, a nd is identified with the Democratic party.
