Per Mrs. Dora Crutchfield Shelton (2001): "Richard Crutchfield and a broth er ? came to America from England in 1729 and settled at Hanover Court, Vi rginia on a grant of land from Queen of England. Somewhere down the li ne a John Crutchfield married a full blooded Cherokee indian named Susan ah in Florida(?)...I think. I have a coat of arms of Crutchfield. Inform ation can be found in Burke's General Armory - Internet? The four prima ry sources for second names were, occupation, location, father name, Crutc hfield means ????? as in 'the field on the hill. Crutchfield came from t he hill in Berkshire, England. Variations of Crutchfield- Crutch, Cruchfie ld, Cruchfeld, Crutchfeld, Crutchfields, Crutchfuld, etc."
Distinguished family members:
"John Crutchfield (1748-1811): Served as Lt. Quartermaster of the Sta te of Virginia during the Revolutionary War."
