RE: Mayes County Whitaker State Home. As nearly as I can tell from readi ng the two preceding messages in reference to this, you are referring to t he Whitaker Orphanage for (white)children opened by the Whitakers befo re OK became a state. After being run by the state and eventually being cl osed down, it was used for a time as a National Guard facility (accordi ng to a clipping I have). These people were my ancestors. My great grandmot her on my grandmother's side was Mary C. Whitaker, sister to the found er of the home. My family notes indicate that the home was founded o ut of a love for the children, and initially was supported by the Whitake rs out of their own pockets. I have heard conflicting stories about condit ions there, but my gut feeling is that their intentions were good. We ha ve a great family story about how the home came to be, but I haven't decid ed if I am willing to share it yet. You will find a little bit about the h ome in Emmett Starr's book "History of the Cherokees" under the name of Wh itaker. I am surprised this information is not available to you. Its be en over a hundred years, and should be considered history.
