182 ii. Duncan Carmichael was born in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scot 11 May 17 55. Duncan died 3 Jul 1834 in Stokes Co, NC at 79 years of age. He marri ed Charity Carmichael Witt circa 1774 in prob Halifax Co, VA.(218) Chari ty was the daughter of Charles Witt and Lamina Harbour Witt. Charity di ed before 1821 in NC.
Duncan immigrated to before 1768. From 1980-81 Publishing Committee of t he James Hunter Chapter, NSDAR Duncan Carmichael was born by traditi on in Scotland, an immigrant with his father and family at age fourteen. D uncan Carmichael is recorded in Caswell Co, NC when a deed ordering the co unty surveyor to lay out for him 300 acres on the waters of Shaw's Mill Cr eek, joining the Virginia line, including the improvements of Duncan Carmi chael Sr and of Richard Smithwick, dated 12 June 1778. He enlisted May 17 81 in 2nd Regiment, NC line, commanded by Col Henry Dixon in Capt Tillm an Dixon's Company, serving as a blacksmith during the battles of Eutaw Sp rings and the Siege of Ninety-Six in SC, discharged June 178?; other docum ents indicate he continued as a blacksmith and farmer all his life. His pe nsion application in Stokes Co, NC includes an inventory of his property a nd his sworn statement that he is no longer able to work as a blacksmit h, due to pain in his right elbow and that he lives with his widowed daugh ter, Mary Ingram, who works to support her five children, his other childr en having left him long ago. His death is recorded in the same court wi th the appointment of his son Barzillia, as guardian for the other heir s, "leaving no widow, but leaving " his children as shown on the family gr oup sheet.

Declaration of Duncan Carmichael – Stokes Co., NC, 22 Oct. 1820 -- Wi ll be 66 years old on 11 May next. Enlisted in Caswell Co., NC, in compa ny of Capt. Tillman Dixon; continental; commanded by Capt. Henry Dixo n. He served 12 months, 13 days, until 5 June 1780 or 1781. He was dischar ged in Mecklenberg Co. He was in the battle of Eutaw Springs and the "sei ge of 96" in South Carolina.
Affidavit of Secretary of State, NC, 10 Nov. 1819 – Muster roll of NC Cont inental Line shows Duncan Carmical, pvt., Capt. Dixon’s Co., 10th Regt., m ustered 15 May 1781 for 12 months; left service 28 May 1782.
Affidavit of Duncan Carmical – 13 Sept. 1821 – Served as a blacksmit h. He lives with daughter Mary Ingram, a widow with 5 children. Duncan sta ted his "other children have long since left me." He is a blacksmith but c an no longer work due to pain in right elbow.

FOURTH GENERATION
27. Mary CARMICHAEL (3) was born about 1785 in Caswell Co., NC. She was re corded in the census in 1820 in Stokes Co., NC. (126) In his 1819 Stokes C o. application for a pension for his Revolutionary War service, Mary's fat her Duncan Jr. testified that he had been living with Mary and her five or phaned sons. She was recorded in the census in 1850 in Forsyth Co., NC.(12 7) She died before 1860 in NC.
She was married to Vachel (or Vench) INGRAM Sr (son of James INGRA M) on 18 Mar 1805 in Caswell Co., NC. (128) Mary and Vachel had five son s. Vachel (or Vench) INGRAM Sr was born in 1783 in Treadwell, Essex Co., E ngland. He died before Apr 1812 in Caswell Co., NC. Vachel's orphans are m entioned in Caswell Co. Court records for April 1812.
