Declaration of Duncan Carmichael – Stokes Co., NC, 22 Oct. 1820 -- Wi ll be 66 years old on 11 May next. Enlisted in Caswell Co., NC, in compa ny of Capt. Tillman Dixon ( continental ) commanded by Capt. Henry Dixo n. He served 12 months, 13 days, until 5 June 1780 or 1781. He was dischar ged in Mecklenberg Co. He was in the battle of Eutaw Springs and the "sei ge of 96" in South Carolina.
Affidavit of Secretary of State, NC, 10 Nov. 1819: Muster roll of NC Conti nental Line shows Duncan Carmical, pvt., Capt. Dixon’s Co., 10th Regt., mu stered 15 May 1781 for 12 months; left service 28 May 1782.
Affidavit of Duncan Carmical ( 13 Sept. 1821 ) Served as a blacksmit h. He lives with daughter Mary Ingram, a widow with 5 children. Duncan sta ted his other children have long since left me.” He is a blacksmith but c an no longer work due to pain in right elbow.

Duncan Carmichael enlisted in the Revolutionary War while residing in Casw ell County, NC. He served in the Company of Capt. Tillman Dixon as a black smith. In 1821 Duncan was living with his daughter, Mary Wilson and stat ed his "other children have long since left me." Statements taken from Law rence and John Angel, indicate Duncan's brother, Joseph Carmichael, also s erved in the Rev. War.

Duncan, Jr. enlisted in Caswell Co. on 15 May 1781 in Dixon's Company, 10 th Regiment in the Continental Line. He was a private and a blacksmit h. Fought in the battle of 96 South Carolina and in the battle of Euwt ah Springs, SC. Left the service on May 28, 1782 and drew a pension of $8 /month beginning October 1819. His pension number in the National Archiv es is S414.67 and his certificate number is 16.023. He had lost his disch arge papers, so a neighbor, Bartlett Yancey, a teacher, lawyer, and memb er of the House of Representatives, gave a sworn oath that they were neigh bors and that Duncan had served in the Revolution.

Duncan, Jr.'s obituary was in the WESTERN CAROLINIAN in Salisbury, Augu st 2, 1834. He died at home in Stokes Co., Near Germanton, NC at age of 8 2. He had a land grant in Caswell Co. in 1778 on the NC and VA state li ne in the St. Lawrence District. He lived there and the Hico River near by until 1788, then moved to the St. David's District in Caswell Co., whi ch is in the Locust Hill Community. He lived there until 1812 when he mov ed to Stokes Co., near Germanton.
His pension application in Stokes Co., NC includes an inventory of his pro perty and his sworn statement that he is no longer able to work as a black smith, due to pain in his right elbow and that he lives with his widowed d aughter, Mary Ingram, who works to support her five children, his other ch ildren having left him long ago.
His death is recorded in the same court with the appointment of his son Ba rzillia as guardian for the other heirs, "leaving no widow, but leaving t he following children" [which are then named].
