1790 NC Census, Richmond Co., p. 46 (look up: 01-02-05-00-00)
Archibald Carmichael, the administrator of the estate of Peter Graves, J r. (inventory shown on p. 158 of Aubrey Graves' book and incorrectly thoug ht to be the estate of Peter Graves, Sr.) declared in his (Archibald Carmi chael's) will, 17 March 1827, Surry Co., NC, that he gave to his "daught er Sarah Graves all my tract of land that I now live on together with a ll the farming utensials [sic] the above land to belong to the said Sar ah Graves and her two children Thomas Graves and Jain Graves and that my w ife Sallie Carmichael is to live on it her life time." R-2 incorrectly quo ted this as "her mother Elizabeth"; Elizabeth died between 1814 and 1827 a nd Archibald referred to his wife as Sallie, who is thought to be a Martin dale according to R-5. Since Archibald's will named no other grandchil d, it seems unlikely that William Graves, born 5 Feb. 1815, was a son of t his Peter Graves as stated in the book by Aubrey Graves. This William is i ncluded in genealogy 888.
Sarah remarried between 17 March 1827 (the date of her father's will) a nd 10 March 1829; in 1829 in Surry Co. deed book V, pp. 146-7, Joseph Carm ical, Alexander Carmical, and "Sarah Graves...her present husband Willi am Martindale", sold land inherited from Archibald Carmical. In Patrick Co ., VA, deed book 7, p. 364, William Martindale, alias Brown, and wife Sar ah Martindale, sold land 23 Sept. 1829. The family moved to Greene Co., IN .
Sarah was believed buried in Carmichael Cem., east of Cincinnati, IN, in G reene Co., near the Monroe Co. line. The original, thin sandstone mark er on her grave was inscribed "Sarah wife of Peter Graves", with no date s. (R-2, R-503)
