  Joseph William died at Orange Courthouse, Virginia after contracting measl es and pneumonia while serving in the army during the Civil War. His wido w, Eliza Pegram Lasley, settled in Rockingham Co., NC and reared her child ren to maturity. She gave land for the Mt. Zion Methodist Church locat ed between Stokesdale and Madison and was one of the founders of the churc h. Her tombstone in the cemetery is unique in that all the names of h er 9 children are listed on the back of the stone. Buried: buried at Wentworth UMC Cemetary 1308 NC 65, Rockingham Co., NC
