- Listed in parent's estate papers. More proof is needed that this William J. Stafford is the one that married Mary Whipple.
Per Casey Stafford.
If the research I have done has led me to the correct conclusion, William Stafford is the same man identified in history as Captain William S. Stafford, an American privateer from Baltimore who led the naval Battle of the Rappahannock in 1813. He was defeated and the British took him captive and turned his flagship Dolphin into the HMS Dolphin. He was later returned to Baltimore.
According to the research of Feliciano Gamez Duarte (2007), William J. Stafford was known by the aliases William S. Stafford, Joseph Stafford, John Forbes, and Jose Guillermo Estifano, and continued his career as a privateer raiding the English under the Spanish flag after the War of 1812 ended.
Born:
- Later Hampshire Co., and now Mineral Co., Virginia.
