  William Ledford was born in 1722 in Lancaster, England. William Ledford and this older brother, Henry, and his younger brother, John, indentured themselves to a ship captain named James Patton and sailed from Lancaster, England in 1738 on the ship Walpoole to the Tidewater region of Virginia (Belhaven near Alexandria). The indentures were for seven years. Patton took these people to Augusta County, Virginia where he and a relative named John Lewis, had received a land grant from the Virginia Colony. The three brothers worked off the indentures and married and raised families first in Virginia and later in North Carolina.
