Alethea
English: a learned coinage, not found before the 17th century. Itrepresents the Greek word aletheia truth, and seems to have arisen as aresult of the Puritan enthusiasm for using terms for abstract virtues asfemale names. See also Althea.

Mae
English: variant spelling of May, possibly influenced by Maeve. It hasbeen most notably borne by the American film actress Mae West(1892–1980), whose prominent bust led to her name being given, by membersof the RAF, to a type of inflatable life-jacket used in the Second WorldWar. This spelling is now no longer much used.
May
English: pet form of both Margaret and Mary. The popularity of this name, which was at its height in the early 20th century, has been reinforced bythe fact that it fits into the series of month names with April and June, and also belongs to the group of flower names, being another word for thehawthorn, whose white flowers blossom in May. It has been out of fashionfor a time.

Stafford
English: habitational name from any of the various places in England socalled, which do not all share the same etymology. The county seat ofStaffordshire (which is probably the main source of the surname) is namedfrom Old English stæð ‘landing place’ + ford ‘ford’. Examples in Devonseem to have as their first element Old English stan ‘stone’, and one inSussex is probably named with Old English steor ‘steer’, ‘bullock’.
