"FORT WORTH CORPORAL, KILLED IN GRENADE ACCIDENT, SAVED COMPANIONS BEFORE DYING"
"The last words of Corporal John H. Stafford, who was killed by accidental discharge of a grenade, was a warning that saved the lives of several of his companions.
This is stated in a letter from France written by his Captain, James D. Cozby of the Fifty-First Infantry. It was received by Stafford's sister, Mrs. C. L. Willett, 1112 Baltimore Avenue.
"Corporal Stafford was universally respected and admired for his upright Christian manhood, the letter states. He was a man on whom I could rely at all times to do his duty, and was on my list for promotion at the time of his death. His last thought was of his companions, for when he saw that an explosion was coming, he cried out to his men in warning in time to save several lives that otherwise would have been lost."
The grave has been marked so that it can be located and cared for, the letter adds.
Stafford has a brother, D. Stafford of 937 Richmond Avenue."
