- between June 18, when he made his will and July 11, when his fat herin his will of that date named him as deceased.
Thomas Payne was born in 1510 in Great Ellingham Norfolk Englan d and died between June 18, 1555 when he made his will and Jul y 11, 1555, when his father made his will and named him as decea sed. He married Cecily Turnor, who died after August 26, 1555 , when she was executrix of his will. She was daughter of Thoma s Turnor, mentioned in his will as father-in-law. In his will , written just three weeks before his father, Tomas Payne of Gre at Ellingham, draper, requested burial in the churchyard of Elli ngham and directed that 40 shillings be bestowed to the poor o f the parish on his burial day and 20 shillings twice in the yea r after. He godchildren, not named. To his son Anthony, who wa s then a minor, he left he left "my tenement and land lyeing i n Ellingham aforesaid which I latelie purchased of Thomas Pydgeo n" He willed an eight-year interest "to Cecylie my wyff (in) tw o acres of ffree land lying in Ellingham which I purchased of Si r Thomas Holme," as well as "all the residewe of my tenements la nds medowes, pasturs, heredytaments, bond and soyled, " which af terwards "shall hoolie remaine to George Payne my sonne." He pl aced a penalty upon George if he should fail to convey Anthony' s property upon Anthony's majority, by providing the "yf the sam e George shall refuse or omytte soo to doo I will that my teneme nt called Archers conteyning two acres of land lieng in the nort h Street called Engats abutting upon the common against the nort h shall remain to the said Anthony." It is unclear if this is t he same two acres bought from Sir Thomas Holme or possibly "th e land which his father did give him" according to the entry i n the will of Thomas.
Apparently George discharged this obligation adequately, for amo ng his holdings in 1556, the Great Ellingham Field Book155613t h Field (Norfolk Record Office, Walsingham Collection, pg. 47d ) lists "Various pieces of meadow and closes and messuages at En gate bounded of itself lying mostly west, going south.
Thomas further bequeathed to "Margaret Payne, Anthony Payne, Ale xander Payne, John Payne, Thomas Payne and Cecylie Payne my chil dren to each of them four pounds of lawful money of England to b e paid to every one of them his or her part as they come to thei r several ages of xviii (16) years and if any of them shall marr y before that age then he or she soo marieng before the said ag e to be paid at his or their maryage." This list of children i s identical with that in the will of Thomas his father, and bot h wills omit George from the list although naming him elsewhere . Thomas left to his mother 2s., to "George my son my "redde bu llok" and to "Margaret by daughter my brown cow which I bought o f Robert Ryxe." He left 5s. to John Payne, his brother, 12s. t o Margaret Payne, his sister-in-law, 12s to John Payne, son of h is brother John, 2s. to Johan Dowsing his servant, and 12s. to W illiam Duffild. He named his wife Cecylie executrix and "Thoma s Turnor my father-in-law" and John Cadye executors. Witnesse s were Robert Wright, John Payne the elder (his brother), Willia m Duffyld and George Payne.
