Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Paul Schelm Funeral Chapel, Port Charlotte, Florida, for William Stafford, 69, of 1337 Amber Street, Port Charlotte, and formerly of Westernport, Md., who died September 9 at the Fort Meyers Southeast Regional Medical Center.
The Rev. Miles W. McDonald officiated and burial was in the Port Charlotte Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda, where military rites were accorded.
Born December 24, 1919 in Lonaconing, Md., he was a son of the late John Stafford and Elizabeth (Major) Stafford.
He was a resident of Port Charlotte for 25 years.
A disabled veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. He was wounded February 1, 1945 while serving with Merrill’s Marauders in the Burma Theater. He was awarded numerous medals including the Unit Citation, Asian Pacific Medal with Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
Mr. Stafford was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Port Charlotte; Victory Post 155, American Legion, Westernport, Md., and Post 82, Disabled American Veterans of Pennsylvania.
He is survived by his widow, Anna Kent (Johnson); one son, William Kent Stafford, Port Charlotte; one daughter, Letitia Ann Stafford, Port Charlotte; three sisters, Jennie Dodd and Ruth Uhl, both of Frostburg, Md., and Isabelle Cochran, Bellaire, Ohio and one grandchild, Nydia Ann Stafford, Port Charlotte.
