"The News-Herald" Hillsboro, Ohio, March 25, 1897, Page 8 Obituary
As the leaves of the laurel are pressed to the earth by the weight of a thunder shower, so are our souls made heavy by affliction. The waves of misfortune dash up before us, a child is snatched from the fond embrace of a mother, companions who have buffeted the waves for years are separated. Today a companion is left to travel the remainder of the pilgrimage alone, and a home is left destitute of a mother. The one word that makes the home.
Miriam Stafford was born January 30, 1829, died March 19, 1897, aged 68 years and 2 months. She was married to Alfred Swadley September 5, 1850. Almost 47 years of congenial companionship. While we feel affliction deeply, we sorrow not as those who have no hope.
Knowing that a foundation of wood, hay or stubble would not stand, sister Swadley had built upon the sure foundation - Christ Jesus.
She joined the church and was converted when a child. Her life work seemed to be in her home, always busy with a faithful wife's and mother's duties. And who will deny the fact that it requires a more indomitable spirit and a nobler courage to right life's battles as a mother, than is required on the battlefield? She leaves a husband and five children to mourn her loss.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. E. L. Knox and Rev. J. H. Midleton.
