- John Franklin enlisted into Captain Andrew J. May's Company A, 5th
Regiment Infantry (Ragamuffin Regiment), 1st Kentucky Brigade (Orphan
Brigade), Confederate States Army as a Private on October 21, 1861 at West
Liberty, Kentucky. He reenlisted into Company C, 5th Regiment Infantry,
1st Kentucky Brigade (Orphan Brigade), Confederate States Army as a 4th
Corporal on September 20 at Salyersville, Kentucky. He was promoted to
4th Sergeant. He was wounded in both legs at Chickamauga and recovered.
He fought also at Rocky Face Gap. He was wounded in the hand at Resaca on
May 14, 1864, but took part in some of the subsequent engagements. The 5th
Regiment Infantry was Mounted in September of 1864. His pension
application is #2115, 24 June 1912, Magoffin County, Kentucky.
