- Sir Winston Churchill I, her father, arranged for her to be accepted as
the lady-in-waiting to the King's sister-in-law, the Duchess of York in
1665. She wsa said to have caught the eye of the Duke of York when a
runaway horse threw her and the gallant Duke of York galloped off to her
rescue. Soon after, Arabella Churchill became the mistress of the Duke of
York and bore him four children. One of these children, the Duke of
Berwick, became Marshall of France and a commander who opposed his uncle,
John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough.
