  From the 1860 census for Ripley County, Indiana we learn that Joseph Allen was born in Ireland c 1825. The death record of his son Hugh in Louisville indicates that both of his parents were from Belfast. Joseph was married March 16, 1851 in Hamilton County, Ohio to Jane Stafford. The first child of this union was born in Ohio December 20, 1851. The second child was born into the family in Indiana, probably Dearborn County, in October 1853. In the census records for 1860 and 1870 it is learned that the couple had at least eight children by c 1865. We also learn from the 1870 census that the couple no longer were living with each other. It is unclear if Joseph died or if the couple was seperated, but all of the children are living with Jane in Ripley County in 1870.
