HAD RESIDED IN THIS CITY FOR OVER 60 YEARS

Joseph “J.” Stafford Whose Death
Occurred Wednesday Was One of
the Very First Settlers in Wauke-
gan and Lake County.

CAME HERE WHEN
TEN YEARS OF AGE

Death Followed a Lingering Illness:
Mr. Stafford Had Been Engaged in
Painting and Decorating Besides
As Contractor.

In the death of Joseph J. Stafford
Wednesday noon at his residence on
North Utica Street. Waukegan loses
one of its oldest residents, for Mr.
Stafford had been a continuous resi-
dent of the city for the past sixty
years. He came here from England
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wil-
liam S. Stafford when he lived until
September 22 next, he would have
been 70 years old.
His death followed a years sick-
ness from a complication of diseases,
which assumed a serious aspect one
month ago when he took to his bed.
Mr. Stafford had followed the
occupation of a decorator and paint-
ing contractor during his residence
here and his death removes the old-
est man in his line of working the
county. He had followed the voca-
tion up to about a year ago when
ill health caused him to give up work entirely. Mr. Stafford was not only well
known in the city, but in the county
as well and his even disposition and
kind temperament made him a man
whom everybody who knew liked
and thought well of.
Mr. Stafford leaves a widow who
lived with him on North Utica street
one brother, Fred, of Vicksburg.
And six children as follows: Mrs.
Mae Cowley, Brookwood, Ill; Joe
Charleston, W. Va; Mrs. Carrie
Koslowski, Hawthorne, Ill; George
II, of Cunningham. Va; Aaron, Lib-
ertyville, Ill; Annie, Chicago. These
children are all by a former wife,
who was formerly Mary Woodman,
also an early resident of Waukegan.
Mr. Stafford’s widow is a well known
resident of the county. She was
formally Mrs. Sarah Brogden widow
of James Brogden of Waukegan.
There are no children of this current
wife.

residence, 215 North Utica street.
