• Notes

  At 19 he went to Knoxville TN and enlisted as a private in the Union Army. He served in G Company, Sixth Tennessee Infantry from 18 May 1862 until mustered out in Nashville TN on the 17th of May 1865. He apparently helped his father run a Grocery/General Store in Sevier County in the 1880's. He was appointed Postmaster of Sevierville TN on 26 Oct 1885, a post he held until his death on 18 Nov 1886. The vacancy was then filled by his father-in-law, Michael A Rawlings. It is believed that he was a member of the Masonic order, since upon his death, his minor children went into the Masonic Orphanage to complete their education. Census: Listed as Pleasent Stafford with wife Nancy E. J., sons Walter R. & son age 2 and daughter Ellie V. Parents born in TN.
