102299 | Nelson seems to have been a common given name among these longs, as th ey probably all descend from John Nelson Long Sr, born c1770 in Pennsylvan ia. Nelson is found living with his parents in the 1870 census working for t he railroad in Cumberland, Maryland, but a Nelson Long of the same a ge is found in thehome of Upton G. Long, boating in the canal. Boating w as something his father later took up, and it is possible that Nelson w as recorded twice at two different locations. In 1880, he is list ed as a bar keeper and a widower, living in the home of Clara Coleman. The Upton and Nelson Long brothers found together in the census are so ns of John Long, born 1796. I cannot account for Nelson Long after 1880; he doesn't appear in the 19 00 or later census; however,Sarah Stafford Long told the census she had g iven birth to 12 children, and that 10 were still alive. I can only accou nt for 11 children, and one--Catherine--seems to have died young. That wo uld leave 10 still living, including Nelson. So either I am missing a chi ld, or Sarah was mistaken, or something. | LONG, Nelson (I108365)
