103701 Note by Bob Young 10/11/99

I have Michael Ruttan possibly living common-law with Ann Freel (from 1819 Loughborough Census) and having Abraham & Christopher (b1818); because of the b-dates of the next 3 children, (1827, 1830 & 1831) I have thot' that there was another common-law wife involved at this time. Then comes Mary Ann Mountainee who comments on Michael's philandering ways on the birth of her son John S. (Feb. 1858):

"He is the one lawful male child (of Michael) of which I am the mother....". They were married in Apr. 1858. (3 years b4 Michael dies) I have grouped under Mary Ann the following children: Charles E. (b1845), Cynthy B.(b1850), Mary Ann (b1853), and John S. (b2/1858). Harryette says she read somewhere on the net that the 2nd wife may have been
"native." Have you heard this? It's a first for me. The only other possibility I can think of is that we have 2 other different Michaels and all 3 families have been confused due to lack of records.

Just got off the phone with Al Ruttan in Ottawa. I asked him to look thru' his records for Charles E., but he has no other information. He also spoke with Henry Ruttan b4 he wrote "A Part of the Family of Ruttan"and they discussed "skeletons". Al said Henry was quite a "gentleman" and would have left out any scandalous stories about the people in the book. I gathered from Al's tone that he kind of leaned the same way.

103706 Note: Many records have alternate spelling "Compton" This was the first Cumpton Stafford.
--------
From descendent Bill Stafford, < [email protected]> "Compton Stafford first married Ellender McCoy 22 April 1833 Pike Co, Ky Marriage Bonds, and they had 8 children... Then on 18 Aug. 1866 he married Eliza Brewer in Lawrence Co, Ky Marriage Bond, who was the dau. of Isaac Brewer and Elizabeth Mead... I don't know what happened to Ellender, she is in the 1860 Pike Co census, but can't find her after that, so I assume she died and then in 1866 he married Eliza who was divorced from Jacob Marcum. I have both marriage bonds for Compton.

"... I found where Compton/Cumpton is buried, and his stone says he was born in 1815 and he died 14 July 1890. He's buried in Breeden, Logan Co. (now Mingo) WV. It is very hard to read but you can make out the death date and also the 1815 birth date."
--------
By 1880, Cumpton had moved to Breeden, WV, and was in the Logan County census, at Hardee District #26. He was 65, wife Eliza 55, daughter Sarah A. 43, and (adopted) son Robert, age 9.
