"I am told that Grandpa John was bootlegging with some of the Whitleys
(neighbors). John was caught but his friends were not. The land he
lived on still belongs to Chandler cousins and their road is known to the
locals as Chandler Bottoms. Across the highway there are still some
Whitley descendants. The families are still great friends."

John and his first wife Liddie had 12 children. They lived in Limestone Co., AL for awhile then moved to Van Zandt Co., TX. By 1910 they had moved to Kaufman County and finally they settled in Styx which is in Henderson Co., TX. The locals still call the road he lived on "Chandler Bottoms". John was a farmer. He made the mistake of bootlegging for extra money and he was caught. He served 2 years in the Texas prison in Greenville. He finally straightened up and found God. He attended the Church of Christ. John outlived his first wife and then married a woman named Elizabeth.
