11817 | Andrew3 Stafford Born before 1812;1 died on 06 May 1845 in Morgan County, Indiana.2,3 He was the son of Robert Stafford.1 The place of his birth has not been documented, however, his father and mother were in Highland County, Ohio at the approximate time of his birth.4 Andrew was married to Mary Lang on 23 February 1832 in Morgan County, Indiana by his uncle, Grant Stafford.5 Andrew left very few documents so little can be said about his life. A note in Noah Major's book Pioneers of Morgan County: Memoirs of Noah J. Majors mentioned that he was a bowhand on flatboats that navigated the rivers to transport goods from Morgan County to the southern port city of New Orleans, Louisiana.6 The cause of his early death is not known. Most of the information and evidence about his life comes from records left by his wife after his death. During the period of time from 1837 to his death was a busy time for Andrew Stafford with several land deals. The first record showing his acquisition of land was the purchase a 40-acre parcel from David and Matilda Kirkendall in Morgan County, Indiana.7 The next year he purchased a 33.91 acre parcel of land from William and Phebe Jones.8 In addition to buying the parcels of land described above, he also purchased public lands through the Crawfordsville District office. The patents for both of these 40-acre plots of land issued on 10 September 1838.9,10 For some unknown reason Andrew sold the parcel of land obtained by patent from the government within 1 month of the granting of the patent.11 According to the deed records, Andrew Stafford did not own land after October of 1840, however, the tax records do not reflect this status until 1844, with his death recorded in the tax records in 1845.12 Andrew Stafford died without a will on 06 May 18453 probably in Morgan County, Indiana.2 His brother, Benjamin Stafford, was granted the Letters of Administration and posted his bond on 21 May 1845 by the Clerk of the Morgan County Probate Court.4 Benjamin gave Mary Stafford her share of the personal property within a few days of receiving Letters of Administration. Within one week he filed an inventory of the personal property held by Andrew and shortly thereafter he held an auction at Andrew's house. According to the inventory in the estate, Andrew did not own any real property when he died, which is consistent with the Morgan County tax records.12 Benjamin settled the affairs of Andrew's estate by November 1846 and was released of his responsibilities as Administrator of the estate.4 No record was found appointing a guardian for his minor children. They did not own any property and had no cash money to manage, so it was probably not necessary to appoint a guardian to handle their affairs. It is certain that their mother, Mary, cared for them until they established their own homes. The children remained with her until they married. After Andrew's death, Mary and the younger children probably remained in Morgan County until she married William Cox from Johnson County in 1857.14 It is possible that her son, James, introduced her to William Cox. He married William's daughter, Mary Jane in 1855.15 In 1860, Mary and her children are enumerated in his household in Hensley Township.16 This marriage must not have been satisfying to Mary or William as they apparently divorced. A copy of the divorce record from the District Court is on order. Further evidence of their separation is the enumeration showing Mary Cox and her children in Morgan County in 1870.17 During the 1870s many people migrated from the more eastern states to areas west. Mary Cox and her children left their home in Indiana and migrated west to Harrison County, Missouri.18 It is possible that Mary's daughters influenced her decision to move west. Both Rebecca and Rose Ann had married in the 1850s and had their own families.19,20 Both daughters migrated west to Harrison County, Missouri.21,22 For more information about Rebecca Reeves nee Stafford and Rose Ann Adams nee Stafford see their web pages. Mary and the three youngest children followed, daughter Rose Ann and her husband James M. Adams to Harrison County where Mary spent the remainder of her life.3 | STAFFORD, Andrew (I35263)

11818 | Benjamin Barnard Stafford was born about 1847 in Morgan County, Indiana.1 He was the 7th child of Benjamin and Margaret Stafford.2 He apparently died before 1910 or 1911 according to his brother, Grant S. Stafford's obituary.3 The date of his death has not been determined at this time. After returning home from military service during the Civil War,2 he married Miss Cyntha Ann Ware on the 18 April 1866.4 Benjamin enlisted as a private in Company K of the of the 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment, Indiana on 23 November 1863.5 This is the same unit that his older brother, William H. Stafford, was in. He mustered out on the 10 January 1866.5 His pension index card indicates that he also served in the 21st Indiana Infantry.6 After the Civil War Benjamin B. Stafford, Jr. returned to Morgan County, Indiana to his new wife, Cyntha Ann. They were enumerated there in 1870.7 Research is needed to determine if Cyntha died or if they divorced. The Morgan County, Indiana marriage records indicate that Benjamin married a second time to a woman by the name of Susan M. Dooley on 02 February 1877 in Morgan County.8 In 18501 and 1860,9 Benjamin Jr. was living in his father's household. The only census record showing him in his own household was the 1870 census.7 He and Susan have not been located at this time in either 1880 or 1900, however, there is evidence that he remained in Morgan County since his 8 year old son, Benjamin C. Stafford was buried at the Centerton Cemetery following his death which occurred 03 December 1892.10 | STAFFORD, Benjamin Barnard "Benny " Jr. (I64046)

11819 | Benjamin3 Stafford was born 28 May 1810 in Highland County, Ohio to Robert and Sarah Stafford nee Bullock.1,2 Blanchard's History of Morgan, Monroe & Brown Counties in Indiana contains a biographical sketch indicating Benjamin was the third of the seven children born to Robert and Sarah (Bullick [sic]) Stafford, natives of North Carolina and of English ancestry.1 This reference does not cite facts presented in this biography, so further evidence is needed to determine the accuracy of the information in the sketch. The records filed for settlement of Robert Stafford's estate, however, do confirm that Benjamin Stafford of Morgan County, Indiana was Robert's son.2 Blanchard's account also states that Robert and Sarah Stafford went from Ohio to Monroe County, Indiana in 1818 and remained there until March 1820 when they moved to Morgan County.1 Research has not been conducted by this researcher in Monroe County to determine if they did indeed live there for a short time prior to their migration to Morgan County. Benjamin Stafford married Miss Ruthie Gifford, daughter of Jesse Gifford and Sarah Marshall on 15 February 1830 in Morgan County, Indiana.1 Their household was not listed under Benjamin Stafford's name in Morgan or Johnson Counties in Indiana in 1830. The only Benjamin Stafford household enumerated in Indiana, was in Greene County and he had several children living in the household. While it is possible that this could be their household, it seems unlikely since they married four months prior to official census day for the 1830 census. Benjamin and Ruth Stafford were the parents of a single daughter they named Sarah. She was born about 1832 in Indiana1,3 and married Martin Wall when she was in her mid to late twenties.4 There is a tombstone in Freeman Cemetery in Johnson County, Indiana that in inscribed with the name Ruth Stafford.5 The stone is very old and in poor condition. It has been broken or is sunken and only the words "Ruth Stafford Died November" are legible. Her stone is not far from Robert Stafford's stone and appears to be similar in shape and age. [See photograph of tombstone below.] By the time the 25-year old, Benjamin Stafford, purchased the 40-acre parcel of land in Section 11 of Township 12 North of Range 1 East,2 he had married his second wife, .3 Not long after Ruth Stafford's death, Benjamin married a second time to Margaret A. E. Price. They were married in Johnson County, Indiana on 17 March 1835.6 Margaret and Ben Stafford were the parents of eight children, who are named below. Research is not completed for each of their children and records are needed to document their lives. Benjamin and his family lived in Morgan County and are enumerated on the census records there in 1840,7 1850,8 1860,9 187010and 1880.11 Benjamin and Margaret were married about 17 years and had eight children when she died 06 March 185212 leaving him with a house full of children to raise. Information in another biography written by Noah Majors indicates Benjamin married a Miss Sloan after Margaret's death.4 However, no documentation has been found for this marriage record and they did not have any children. It is possible that Mr. Majors was mistaken about her name since there is a marriage record for Benjamin Stafford and Elizabeth Porter, who were married on 01 November 1852.13 Apparently, this marriage did not last long as there is a marriage record for Benjamin Stafford and Susan Fry, who were married on 15 July 1854.14 Evidence is needed to determine what Susan Fry's maiden name was. Tradition from one researcher descending from this line is that her surname was Wall before she married Mr. Fry, but no marriage record has been found to document this. Research is needed to determine if this is correct. Benjamin and Susan Stafford nee Fry had seven children together.1 Benjamin Stafford was the father of 16 children with three of his wives. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and his political affiliation was with the Republican party.4 Benjamin did not leave Indiana, but remained in the Morgan and Johnson County area his entire adult life. He died at the age of 80 on 25 March 1891 and is buried in Morgan County.15 | STAFFORD, Benjamin Barnard Sr. (I35249)
