119717 | We are guessing that Charles was born around 1794. There is no Sandal M agna Church record of his birth or marriage on the LDS IGI file. Charle s was a stone mason as evidenced on the baptism record of Henry, his so n, which we got a copy of the original while in England in April 1995. ( 2) We have now discovered that Charles had died in approximately 1839, p robably in his early forties. In checking the 1841 census, Mary is lis ted as a widow 45 years of age and she has a two year old child named C harles, therefore, we expect that Charles senior must have died between 1 838 & 1839. It can also be noted, in the same census records, that Mary w as listed as having been born in the county of York, therefore, there i s a good chance Charles was also born in York, perhaps making it easier t o determine his parents. It was in this census that we also discovered H enry was not the oldest child in the family as previously thought. He h ad an older brother John and an older brother Thomas. John was 14 in t he 1841 census and Thomas was 15 in the 1841 census. The baptism recor ds for Henry and the two sisters were listed in the LDS IGI file, but t here were no records for John, Thomas or Charles listed in the LDS IGI f ile as of July, 1995. It could be that the records do exist and have n ever been listed in the IGI by anyone. We will now order the microfilm f or the Sandal Magna parish and try to determine exact birth dates / pro of. We will also search for a possible marriage record for Charles and M ary in the same parish files. In young Charles' case, it maybe that th ey never did get him baptized due to the fact he would have been born n ot long after his father's death. In the case of John and Thomas, it c ould also be that the family either did not go to the Sandal Magna Chur ch at that time, or they had not lived in that same area at the time of t heir births. As a child, my father had been told by his grandfather, James, that his g reat great grandfather had died in a ship wreck off of the African coas t. We don' t know for sure if this is true but, with Charles' early de ath, there could be some truth in the story. October 25, 1995 I have found in the Sandal Magna Parish records that the 1841 Parish po pulation was Sandal area 1281, Walton 488, Crigglestone 1479, Bretton 5 64. The Sandal Magna Parish population in 1851 was, Sandal 1536, Walto n 473, Crigglestone 1822, Bretton 492. I have also discovered that Cha rles was born to Thomas and Margaret Stafford on October 16, 1798. He w as at least one of seven children with a younger brother named Henry, w hich is the name he gave to his own third son. I still need to check t he death register for Charles' early death in approximate date of 1838 o r 1839. Also I will have to search the marriage records further to che ck for a marriage record for Charles and Mary in the 1820-1825 timefram e. I should have also noted in this timeframe, that I had forwarded a GEDC OM family history file to the LDS for inclusion to their records. A note here about the Sandal gravesite many of the Staffords were burie d in. The cemetery records lists --- (A) Henry Strafford --- at the to p of the record for that gravesite and then there is a note in parenthe sis (removed). Charles is also listed as a stone mason on Margaret's marriage records. ..see his daughter Margaret's notes. | Stafford, Charles (I12)

119718 | We have nothing on Drusilla as of August 1, 1998. 08/25/00----Determined today that Drusilla was born on July 25, 1764 fr om a listing of christening's from the Sancal Magna parish records that I h ave kept. This had been missed before and was originally listed as unk nown date of birth. This is a good time to point out that the day of c hristening only gives you an approximate date of birth. The actual dat e of birth can be quite a bit different depending on if the church reco rder was around when the christening was taking place or if the church r ecorder may have been ill or out of town at the time of the christening a s well as if the family traveled to the church soon after birth to regi ster the new child. I can imagine if it was winter, the family may not h ave made the trip right away to register the child. Also, it is known t hat long after the English law to register births, deaths and marriages v ia the church, many people believed this would just be another way of t axation and they did not believe in registering the children...so, in m any cases, they simply didn't. | Stafford, Drusilla (I27)

119719 | We have nothing on George as of August 1, 1998. The listing here is very probable but, it has not been totally verified . The children listed are born of a George Stafford a mason in the Wes tside area. The only George that I have found in that area at this tim e is the son of the first Thomas, so it is my belief that George born i n 1760 is the same George that is listed as father to the children that b egin to be born in 1784, which would make him about 24 years old at tha t time. Because there is a high chance that this is the same George I w ill list the names of the children that have been found. I am also l isting the names of Elizabeth and Hannah as the children of George. Ag ain, since there appears to be only one George in the area at that time a nd since he was a mason, I believe he moved into the Hallgreen area whi ch is less than a mile from Newmillerdam and Pledwick areas. For these t wo children, his area has changed from Westside (not to be found on the m ap as a specific area) to Hallgreen...I believe he either moved to this a rea or the area he was in was first known as Westside and then became k nown as Hallgreen. | Stafford, George (I26)

119720 | We have nothing on Henry as of August 1, 1998. 08/25/00 Ashley and I have gone to England in July 2000 to do more gen ealogy. While there we found the Sandal Magna church in Sandal, a coup le of miles south of Wakefield. Gill Cunliffe, the church caretaker, m et us as we were entering the churchyard and she offered to take us in a nd show us the church. This turned out to be a day I will never forget . The church goes back to Saxon times and the original date does not s eem to be known (see Sandal Magna history). The first date mentioned is t he building of the second church in 1150. There were many interesting p arts of the church but, the highlight of the tour came when we reached t he far end of the church behind the pews and there stood the Baptism fo nt. The Font was dated 1647 and was made of stone and had a wooden cov er over the bowl area. It stood about 4 or 4 1/2 feet high. As I stoo d there, I realized that many times over the years my family had stood a t this very spot and had their children baptized and the results of tha t I have been finding in my tracing of the Sandal Magna church records. G ill took off the wooden cover off for me and I was able to see that the i nside bowl was made of lead or zinc. After showing us the 10 different s ections of the church, we went into the Parish Office. Gill unlocked a c orner cupboard and as she pulled out the cemetery records for the churc h, she said, "OK this is the part you really want to see. We opened th e book and immediately found a couple of different listings of Stafford . We were fortunate to have a new digital camera and were able to take p ictures of the pages and see the image and know that it was clear. (see t he photograph section) One of the listings included Henry, Thomas (jun ior's) son where this note is listed and his wife Sarah. To my surprise , the plot also included, Thomas(junior), his wife Margaret (Hoist) Sta fford, Thomas senior, his wife Mary (Conway) Stafford and in our direct l ine Charles, another of Thomas junior's sons, this was Henry's brother. Several weeks after coming home, Ashley had her pictures developed from f ilm and she showed me a picture of another grave that she took in the S andal Magna Churchyard. It is a gravestone of another Henry Stafford. T he gravestone appears to be that of Henry, Hannah, Richard and Maria lo cated in section 1 of the cemetery. If so it is listed in the Sandal M agna cemetery records as grave 1267 in that section. We have no proof t o believe that these people are direct ancestors but, the information h as been kept should we determine the connection in the future. There w ere not that many families in the area but, there were at least two dif ferent lines of Staffords at this time. I am sure the two lines come t ogether but, have not been able to find that as yet. | Stafford, Henry (I52)
