121565 | Winna died 17 March 1891 according to her official Knox County death record. Winna's parents are not named on that death record. Winna's record is indexed as "Minnie Evans." This is a transcribers error as the record itself is very plainly a "W" and not an "M." Her death record states that she both lived and died and was buried at "Pond Creek Mills." Today this would be the area near the Walnut Grove Methodist Church, and probably indicates that I probably misread something along the way. | STAFFORD, Winnie Felina (I96969)

121575 | Winston attended St. John's College at Oxford. While attending St. John's College,, Winston was relatively successful with his studies. He later attended Lincoln's Inn for awhile, bu abandoned his studies to enlist in the King's servcie with his father, John Churchill of Mintum, in August of 1642. This was at the beginning of the Civil War. Winston was eventually promoted to Captain of Horse, due to his distinguished service at Lansdown Hall and Roundway Down. It was soon thereafter that Winston took for his wife Elizabeth Drake, the third daughter of the widowed Lady Eleanor Drake. The Civil War was a trying time for all families concerned, and for the Churchills and Drakes there was no exception. Winston had fought for King Charles I, who lost the war and was eventually beheaded on January 30, 1649. The Drakes sympathized with Parliment, who opposed teh King, thus drawing a line of devision between these two intermarried families. It would be a full ten years before family conditions would improve. Meanwhile, Winston; having been shot in the arm in December of 1645 defending the Royalist garrison of Briston after which time he resigned from the King's servce; was content to reside at "Ashe House" to educate his children, study genealogy, and compose a vast historical and political manuscript. It would be 1675 before this manuscript would come to print. In the meantime Winston remained at his mother-in-law's home, which was but a day's journey by horse from the Churchill home of "Wooten Glanville" near Sherborne in the neighboring county of Dorset, England. The home of the Drakes, "Ashe House," had been gutted by fire. It was without a roof, and the two families were forced to reside in one of the surviving wings of the manor, where there were but a few habitable rooms. It was here that the Churchills and the Drakes managed for the next 12 years, putting aside their political differences in light of their family relationship. It was at this time that Winston was sentenced by Parliment to pay a fine of 446 pounds and 18 shillings, a considerable sum of money for a man of moderate means. Winston delayed payment until 1651, than returned to his study of genealogy, heraldry, and history--more of an English passion than an English pastime. It is because of Winston's work in these endeavors that much early information concerning the Churchill genealogy was not lost to future generations. It was during this time of intense research that Winston, as well as many other English families, traced his ancestry to the Conqueror. He further recorded that some members of the Churchill family had already emigrated to America at the beginning of the Civil War in 1642. Meanwhile, John Churchill of Mintum, the father of Winston, passed away during the year of 1659, leaving his son a yearly income of 1,000 pounds. The next year, 1660, found the Churchills establishing their own residence at "Wooten Glanville." In May of 1661, Winston was elected to Parliment by his home constituency of Weymouth, at which time he acquired a townhouse in the City of London, England. In 1662 Winston was sent to Ireland as a Restitution Commissioner, and soon after moved with his wife and children to Dublin. Winston traveled to London, England in 1664, where he was elected a member of the newly founded Royal Society. Finally, he was appointed Junior Clerk Comptroller to the Board of Green Cloth, minor post in the Royal household. It was at this time that he took up residence at "Whitehall." Sir Winston had become politically secure; unfortunatley, he was not the same financially. After his urgent request to Charles II, the King finally bestowed upon Sir Winston Churchill I a coat of arms. Winston was reported to have expressed his disappointment in the choice of his motto: Feil per desdichado--"Faithful but unfortunate." This motto remains even to this day. Finally in 1675 after many years, Sir Winston's literary manuscript appeared in print. The full title thusly read: "Divi Britannici. Being a remark upon the lives of all kings of this isle, from the year 2855 unto the year of grace 1660." The book was printed by Thomas Roycroft and marketed by Francis Englefield. Consisting of 400 pages, Churchill's work spoke of his time, not always favorably, and addressed the historical events surrounding the Civil War, as well as those individuals who were instrumental in the course of history during Sir Winston's tiime. However, Sir Winston's most outstanding contribution was not his vast literary work, nor his political accomplishments, nor his military endeavors, but a son--a son who would achieve world fame. | CHURCHILL, Sir Winston Ist (I9722)
