The boundary line between DE and MD -- particularly the line between present day Sussex County, Delaware and Dorchester County, Maryland -- was long disputed. Maryland claimed much of what is now present day Sussex County, DE until the 1760's and completion of the Mason-Dixon Survey. For this reason, it is not clear whether Mary was born in Sussex County, DE or in Dorchester, MD.

MARY STAFFORD, daughter of Henry Stafford II, married VALENTINE PEGG prior to May, 1776. Source: MARY's father, Henry Stafford II, stated in his will, dated May 21, 1776, that "I also give to my daughter Mary Pegg: the sum of one shilling - Sterling" which indicates that Mary had married Valentine Pegg prior to 1776,

MARY's birth year, about 1755, is estimated based on the approximate date of her marriage (prior to May, 1776) to Valentine and the birth of her first daughter, Elizabeth (February 7, 1777 ) apparently named after Mary's mother, Elizabeth.

VALENTINE & MARY (Stafford) are believed to have had three daughters: Elizabeth, born Feb.7, 1777, possibly in Deep River, Guilford County, NC ( who married Daniel Nicholson on May 11, 1801, Rowan Co., NC); Mary,Jr. born January 25, 1788 in Deep River, Guilford County, NC and Lydia, born March 28, 1790 in Deep River, Guilford County, NC.

MARY died (probably shortly after the birth of her daughter, Lydia, on March 28, 1790) in Deep River, Guilford Co., N.C. MARY and VALENTINE were married prior to May, 1776.

The informant on Roy's death certificate was William Stafford, Jr. The un dertaker was Fred Dering, Morgantown, WV.

In her Descendants of James Stafford
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/f/o/r/Caroline-Stafford-for bes/ ODT1-0001.html Caroline Stafford Forbes shows Roy as John Lee "Roy" Staf ford. While this is probably accurate, I do not have information to confi rm it, and am using the name Roy, since that is the only name shown for h im in censuses and on his death certificate.
