STAFFORD OBITUARY AUBURN’S LAST CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES Injuries Suffered in Fall Prove Fatal to "Uncle Bill" Stafford, Age 92 Military Funeral To Be Held Monday With the passing of "Uncle Billy" Stafford, who proudly marched away to war when he was 15 years old, DeKalb county’s part in the great Civil conflict becomes but a faint, second-hand memory. Auburn’s only link to that history-making epoch of American history was Corporal William H. Stafford, 92, of 1428 South Wayne Street, who died Friday night at 7:30 o’clock at his home from injuries received in a fall last Saturday from the porch at his home. Funeral services for Auburn’s grand old man of the Grand Army of the Republic will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock (DST) at the residence, with a nephew, Rev. Joseph Ferguson, in charge of the services. Burial will follow in the Woodlawn cemetery. The body was removed from the Dilgard funeral home to the residence Saturday afternoon. Full military honors will be accorded to Corporal Stafford by members of the Spanish-American war veterans and American Legion post of Auburn. They will conduct graveside services. Taps will be sounded by Raymond Quance, and echoed by Wesley Clark, Auburn Boy Scouts, Salutes will be fired by a firing squad. Mr. Stafford was one of six brothers who volunteered their services to the Union during the Civil war period. Every one of them—Thomas, Joseph, John, William, Samuel and James of Jackson township—held an unusual record, inasmuch as each saw action under heavy fire and escaped injury or death during the period of the war. Enlisted Twice in Army Corporal Stafford enlisted twice, the first time in August, 1863, when he was 15 years old but "big for his age," with the eighteenth regiment of Indiana Volunteers for six months’ service. Eight months slipped by, though, before he received his official discharge papers from the government, and the youth then came back to his Jackson township home. After only five days at home young Stafford re-enlisted, this time with the thirtieth regiment. With the thirtieth the lad saw real action, not just the intermittent skirmishing that had characterized his previous time of service. Joining his corps at Rocky Face Mountain, Ga., the company was under fired for a period of 104 days. This corps—the Fourth Indiana—was included in Sherman’s march on Atlanta. Corporal Stafford participated in the actual taking of the city, when the northerners surrounded the town and tore up the railroad. At Lovejoy Station near Atlanta, Auburn’s veteran was one of a group of who forced a southern detachment to retreat. When morning came, the troop was ordered into Atlanta, and so the fall of the strategic southern stronghold became history. When Sherman made his triumphant march to the sea, he left the fourth corps in Atlanta for protection there. However, the south drove the corps to Nashville. At Franklin, Tenn., the south made an offensive move, and there was a four hour fight there in the evening. When midnight came, the Blues got word that they were being cut off from aid and supplies, and the corps, of which Uncle Billy was a member, marched three days and three nights with the opposing army at their heels. When the fourth got to the fort at Nashville, after several days of rest, the Confederates besieged the fort in a three-day fight. Thousands surrendered to the Blues there, and at the close of the three days, those left retreated, hastily marching to re-force Lee’s badly crippled forces. The fourth Indiana followed the retreaters as far a Knoxville, and it was there that word of peace at Appomattox reached the contending detachments of the two armies. Corporal Stafford, then 17, thought that army life was all over for him, but he soon found out differently, when he received word that he was to be a unit in a detachment sent down to lower Texas to protect the Mexican border, during the brief, hectic three years of Maximilians reign as emperor of Mexico. So he made the trip—going down the Tennessee river to Paducah, Ky., and from there in a riverboat down the Ohio and Mississippi to New Orleans, thence across the Gulf of Mexico to Indianola, Texas. Since all was quiet on the Mexican border, as the country had enough internal problems without grasping at other property, the detachment was mustered out of service, and Mr. Stafford returned to his Indiana home. The next spring he hired out to a farmer for $13 a month. Later on he became a timber buyer for the old Nickey and Gandy mill here, as well as a horse buyer. He had been retired for many years. Attended Gettysburg Reunion Last summer the aged veteran attended the national convention of the survivors of the Blue and the Grey at Gettysburg, Pa., and stayed for ten days in the tent city erected on 80 acres of land there. Uncle Billy thoroughly enjoyed himself, talking with veterans from all over the United States. Mr. Stafford and his daughter, Mrs. Hattie Davis, for many years lived during the summer months at Lake Levine, Branch county, Mich., where Uncle Billy fished every day that the weather permitted. His hobbies were fishing, and talking about the Civil war and republican politics. William Stafford was born January 16, 1847, in Highland county, Ohio, a son of John and Maria Enis Stafford. When he was small child the family moved to DeKalb county. There were ten children in the family, eight boys and two girls, all of whom have died except one sister. In January of 1870, Mr. Stafford and Miss Mary Jane Walters of DeKalb county were married. He was a member of DeLong post No. 67 as long as it was maintained here, and also held membership in the Bass-Lawton post at Fort Wayne. For forty years he was a member of the Auburn Knights of Pythias lodge. He was also an honorary member of the Lions club. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Davis, who resided with her father, and Mrs. Maude Shilling of east of Auburn; one granddaughter, Mrs. Bonnie Mitchener of southeast of Auburn; four great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Lida Long of Sturgis, Mich. In addition the following nieces and nephews also survive: Mrs. Flora Green, 702 South Van Buren street, Auburn, Mrs. Clara Ashelman of 215 West Thirteenth street, Auburn and Mrs. Ora Smith of Chicago, who has been aiding with the care of her uncle since Sunday. Corporal Stafford was the only Civil was survivor in DeKalb county until Parker N. Ingalls, 92, of Anderson, moved to the home of his son, Dr. M. E. Ingalls at Garrett, several weeks ago. Stafford, Trustee of Delaware Township, a former member of the advisory board of that township and a substantial farmer and landowner, residing on Rural Mail Rout No. 2 out of Albany, was born in Delaware Township and has lived there all his life. Mr. Stafford was born on July 3, 1869, and is a son of George A. and Sarah (Zehner) Stafford, the latter of whom was born in Wayne County, Indiana, and was a daughter of Benjamin Zehner, who came into Delaware County in 1856 and bought the old Godlove Mill along Campbells Creek in the Sharon (Desoto) settlement later and long known as Zehner's Mill. George A. Stafford was born on a pioneer farm in Delaware Township, this county, in 1835 and was a son of Ralph and Jane (Black) Stafford, the latter of whom was a daughter of Andrew Black, the pioneer miller along the Mississinewa in the northwestern part of Delaware Township, who had come in here with his family from Clark County, Ohio. Ralph Stafford was a Virginian, born in Giles County, in 1806, a son of George and Catherine (Fair) Stafford, who had come to this country from Ireland. George A. Stafford became a well-to-do farmer, the owner of a 240-acre farm in Delaware Township, where all his life was spent. To him and his wife were born four children, of whom the subject of this sketch was the second in order of birth. Reared on the home farm in Delaware Township, Cyrus J. Stafford supplemented the schooling received in the local schools by a course in the old Northwestern Indiana Normal School at Valparaiso and was graduated from that institution in 1890. Following his marriage two years later he and his wife established their home on the place where they are now living in Delaware Township, a part of the James Marquell Estate, 120 acres of which is owned by Mrs. Stafford, and have since resided there, Mr. Stafford being engaged in general farming and stock raising. For years Mr. Stafford gave particular attention to the breeding of horses and did much to advance the standards of horseflesh hereabout. In 1903 he bought a "forty" in the neighborhood of his home, later added to this tract and adjoining tract of 120 acres, making 160 acres in that farm, and later secured a farm of 245 acres west of Albany, his present land holdings thus aggregating 405 acres. Mr. Stafford is a Republican and for four years served as a member of the advisory board for Delaware Township. In 1923 he was elected trustee of Delaware Township and is now serving in that responsible public capacity. On December 20, 1892, Cyrus J. Stafford was united in marriage to Cora E. Marquell, also a member of one of the pioneer families of this county, and to this union were born four children, Cloyd C., Ervin E., Ethel A. and Lottie M., all of whom are married and have children of their own, Mr. and Mrs. Stafford having eight grandchildren. Cyrus was trustee of Delaware Twp, a former member of the advisory board of that township and a substantial farmer and landowner, living his entire life in this township. He supplemented the schooling received in the local schools by attending the old Northwestern Indiana Normal School at Valparaiso, graduating from there in 1890. He married two years later and he and his wife established their home on a part of the James Marquell estate, 120 acres of which was owned by Mrs. Stafford. For years Mr. Stafford gave particular attention to the breeding of horses, advancing the quality of horses used in his vicinity. He eventually owned 405 acres of land in and around Albany, IN. Stafford, Trustee of Delaware Township, a former member of the advisory board of that township and a substantial farmer and landowner, residing on Rural Mail Rout No. 2 out of Albany, was born in Delaware Township and has lived there all his life. Mr. Stafford was born on July 3, 1869, and is a son of George A. and Sarah (Zehner) Stafford, the latter of whom was born in Wayne County, Indiana, and was a daughter of Benjamin Zehner, who came into Delaware County in 1856 and bought the old Godlove Mill along Campbells Creek in the Sharon (Desoto) settlement later and long known as Zehner's Mill. George A. Stafford was born on a pioneer farm in Delaware Township, this county, in 1835 and was a son of Ralph and Jane (Black) Stafford, the latter of whom was a daughter of Andrew Black, the pioneer miller along the Mississinewa in the northwestern part of Delaware Township, who had come in here with his family from Clark County, Ohio. Ralph Stafford was a Virginian, born in Giles County, in 1806, a son of George and Catherine (Fair) Stafford, who had come to this country from Ireland. George A. Stafford became a well-to-do farmer, the owner of a 240-acre farm in Delaware Township, where all his life was spent. To him and his wife were born four children, of whom the subject of this sketch was the second in order of birth. Reared on the home farm in Delaware Township, Cyrus J. Stafford supplemented the schooling received in the local schools by a course in the old Northwestern Indiana Normal School at Valparaiso and was graduated from that institution in 1890. Following his marriage two years later he and his wife established their home on the place where they are now living in Delaware Township, a part of the James Marquell Estate, 120 acres of which is owned by Mrs. Stafford, and have since resided there, Mr. Stafford being engaged in general farming and stock raising. For years Mr. Stafford gave particular attention to the breeding of horses and did much to advance the standards of horseflesh hereabout. In 1903 he bought a "forty" in the neighborhood of his home, later added to this tract and adjoining tract of 120 acres, making 160 acres in that farm, and later secured a farm of 245 acres west of Albany, his present land holdings thus aggregating 405 acres. Mr. Stafford is a Republican and for four years served as a member of the advisory board for Delaware Township. In 1923 he was elected trustee of Delaware Township and is now serving in that responsible public capacity. On December 20, 1892, Cyrus J. Stafford was united in marriage to Cora E. Marquell, also a member of one of the pioneer families of this county, and to this union were born four children, Cloyd C., Ervin E., Ethel A. and Lottie M., all of whom are married and have children of their own, Mr. and Mrs. Stafford having eight grandchildren. Cloyd C. Stafford married Nellie Meeker and has tow children, Cloyd, Jr., and George A. Ervin E. Stafford married Bessie Selvey, who died leaving one child, a daughter, Lillie E. Selvey. Ethel A. Stafford married Wayne Campbell and has three children, Carl E., Carroll E., and Sarah Lou. Lottie M. Stafford married Fred Whitechair and has two children, Winona C. and Donleon. Mrs. Cora E. Stafford was born on the farm on which she still is living, and is a daughter of James and Louisa (Godlove) Marquell, the latter of whom was born in that same township, a daughter of Abram and Laura (Sellers) Godlove, pioneers of the Sharon settlement. James Marquell also was born in Delaware Township, in 1844, and was a son of Mason and Elizabeth (Selvey) Marquell, the latter of whom was a daughter of Samuel Selvey, a Virginian and one of the early settlers of this township. Mason Marquell also was a Virginian and for two or three years had made his home in Greene County, Ohio, whence in 1832 he came over here into Delaware County and settled in Delaware Township. | 1750 | GEORGE A. STAFFORD. -- The Township of Delaware, in the county of the same name, has long been noted for its fine farms and excellent class of citizens, and a prominent representative the latter is found in the person of the subject of the following sketch. George A. Stafford was born in Delaware county, Indiana, November 23, 1835, a son of Ralph and Jane (Black) Stafford, the former a native of Giles county, Virginia, born in 1806. Ralph Stafford was a son of George and Catherine (Fair) Stafford, both natives of Ireland. Mrs. Jane Black Stafford was born in Clarke County, Ohio, May 30, 1815, and was the daughter of Andrew and Susan (Ross) Black, whose genealogy appears elsewhere in this volume. The paternal grandparents of the subject located in Clarke County, Ohio, in 1811, and there engaged in farming and in superintending a tannery, and remained in that locality until the times of their demise, the father dying in 1876 and the mother in 1888. Ralph Stafford was but a boy of five years when he accompanied his parents to Clarke County, and there he grew to manhood, attending the common school at intervals in the meantime. He early learned the trade of tanner and also that of shoemaking under the supervision of an uncle, John Black, with whom he remained for a term of two years, after which he went into partnership with Mr. Black, with whom he remained until 1835, when he came to Delaware County. He had visited this county in 1834, and entered 160 acres of land, returning again in September 1835. Here he built an old-fashioned log cabin, with puncheon floor, and this covered but half the area of the house. He remained on the place until 1854 and then removed to the farm now owned by his son, William, where he spent his declining years, departing this life August 12, 1876; his remains were laid to rest in the Black Cemetery. His wife survived him until December 21, 1888, at which time she was laid by his side in the same peaceful spot, where a beautiful monument marks their last resting place. For many years, they were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and were well known and respected people. He had served as trustee and gave satisfaction as an honest official, and at the time of his death, he owned 484 acres of land in Delaware Township. They were the parents of five children, as follows: George A., James E., John H., William H. and Susan, deceased. The immediate subject of this mention was reared on the home farm and received the advantages of a good education in the excellent common schools. He learned the trade of tanner, which he followed until twenty-four years of age, and then turned his attention to agricultural pursuits, renting land of his father. He was married April 16, 1867, at which date he located where he now resides, owning at this time 280 acres of very valuable land, and his crops annually go far to swell the yield of the great state. His residence is a modern one of beauty and utility, and his grounds display, in their neatness and completeness, the presence of an excellent manager. Mr. Stafford votes with the Republican Party, and rejoices in its successes. Since 1864, he has been a member of the Masonic order. In June 1892, he became a director in the Farmers' Bank, of Muncie, and is largely interested in the same. He married Miss Sarah A. Zehner, who was born in Wayne County, Indiana, June 14, 1844, daughter of Benjamin and Hester (Hoppas) Zehner, of German ancestry, who were pioneers of Wayne County in 1841. Mr. and Mrs. Stafford have a family of four children, as follows: David R.; Cyrus J., Emma C. and Ray J. The family is connected with the Lutheran and the Methodist churches are good and worthy people, highly esteemed in Delaware Township. Mr. Stafford has been largely interested in and identified with the growth of the city of Muncie, having made a large purchase of real estate in 1887, which was laid out in city lots and known as the "Winton addition." He has since kept up his interests in Muncie by subsequent purchases, which have been profitable.
