CLINARD WINSTON-SALEM Dr. Robert Wesley Clinard April 4, 1931-Dec. 3, 2014 Dr. Robert Wesley Clinard, 83, of Winston Salem, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 03, 2014 while under Hospice care at Universal Healthcare, Nashville, NC. Bob was born on April 4, 1931 in Walburg, NC to the late Fletcher and Mozelle Clinard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Stafford Clinard, and a sister, Helen Clinard Chilton. He was a graduate of Walburg High School and later of the UNC-CH School of Dentistry. After graduation, he practiced Dentistry in the US Air Force, and was stationed at Eielson AFB, near Fairbanks, AK. During this time, he attained the rank of Captain. After leaving the Air Force, he began his private practice as a partner with Dr. William F. Yelton, located in the old Nissan building. He then opened a very successful private practice, until his retirement 45 years later. Dr. Clinard was an active and beloved member of the Chapel Sunday School class at Centenary United Methodist Church. He was active in the church for over 64 years, and was involved in the soup kitchen, bible study, community garden, and many other outreach activities. He was also an active member of: Twin Cities Lions Club, American Dental Association, NC Dental Society, and the Forsyth Dental Society (past president). During his retirement years, he taught at Forsyth Tech, and volunteered with a traveling dental outreach program, and a program in Lexington for underprivileged needs. After bypass surgery at age 60, Bob chose to take up running, and progressed to the point of completing many races, up to 10k distances. He was a familiar face at the Sherwood Parcourse and at the YMCA to other local runners for decades. While feeding his need for physical activity, he fed his soul with many bluegrass festivals, classical concerts, art exhibits, plays, and farmer's markets. He was an avid history buff, saying often that he would have loved that career path. Perhaps deriving from his stint in the military, he was quite fond of all things that could fire a bullet, and would quickly wax poetic on his extensive collection. Bob served his faith well, with his generous and giving nature. He supported several charities, particularly the Childrens' Home Society, Salvation Army, and Meals on Wheels. He never met a stranger, and loved taking time to get to know everyone he ran across. Loved and adored by people he just met, the affection was even greater from family and friends. He is survived by two daughters: Jana Clinard Harris and husband, Digit, of Nashville and Anne Clinard Nelson and husband, Lars, of Raleigh; seven grandchildren, Harrison Lange, Jackson Lange, Hollis Harris, Grayson Harris, Odin Nelson, Stella Nelson, and Quinn Nelson; three nieces: Leslie Blum, Claire Parfitt, and Janet Ratchford. The family will have a private graveside service Friday, December 5th.
