1928 | Family folklore is as follows: "... Both [James Gilcrease Stafford and Louzena Melissa Lloyd] were born in Guilford County, NC. They were Quakers, and even though James' father owned slaves, James did not believe in slavery or fighting. Sometime before April 1864, during the Civil War, James left NC and headed west. One of his brothers was a policeman and helped him leave town without the authorities knowing he was leaving. He left riding a Roan horse. He left his pregnant wife and small son behind. He went to Kansas or Missouri. Probably about October 1864, his wife, Louzena; son, John; and baby daughter, Mary, joined him by traveling in a covered wagon. They finally settled in Tipton County, Indiana, sometime between 1875 and 1878." (as written by Lela Stowe) ---------- Deed Book 18, Recorder's Office, Tipton County, Indiana -- p.314 Walter R.
