20243 | From Saginaw News obituary: Ralph J. Stafford of Ludington passed away Sunday, January 9, 2005, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Age 86 years. Ralph was born on October 17, 1918 in Elmira, Michigan to Ralph Charles and Zilpha Louise (DeFoe) Stafford. He attended high school in Rogers City, Michigan where he was captain of the basketball team. Following high school Ralph entered Central Michigan Normal school where he majored in Chemistry. In 1941 Ralph answered tha call of duty as he began his service in the Army Air Corps. While in the service he married Ordie Maysel Norris, his wife of 52 years. In April of 1944 as part of the First Air Commando Force of the AAF he participated in the Burma Invasion, some 200 miles behind Japanese lines. After the war Ralph remained active in the Air Force Reserves and retired with a distinguished rank of Lt. Colonel in 1967. Ralph and his family spent 12 years in Muskegon, Michigan, where he worked at Seal Power Corporation. Moving to Saginaw, Michigan in 1952, Ralph began a long career with the Saginaw Steering Gear Division of General Motors working his way up to Division Buyer. A move to Decatur, Alabama found him in charge of procurement for the Saginaw Steering Gear plant. Upon retirement he and his wife returned to Michigan and lived in the Grand Rapids area closer to their children and grandchildren. After the loss of his beloved wife Ordie, Ralph moved to Ludington where he joined the American Legion and became a member of the Lincoln Hills Golf Club. Ralph was an excellent dancer and enjoyed the "Big Band" sound. He loved tennis, golf, and playing with the stock market. However, the most important thing in his life were his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife Ordie Stafford and grandson Shane Gartside. She was adopted and raised by Zella and S. Roy Bricker in Saginaw. She graduated from Saginaw High School and attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. She married Mr. Willy on August 24, 1948. They moved to Green Valley in 1981 where she was a member of Valley Presbyterian Church. She was a volunteer at the Tucson Veterans Administration Hospital for 20 years, and was a past president of the Christian Women's Club of Green Valley. Mrs. Willy was also an organizing Regent of the Madera Canyon chapter of the DAR.
