NOTE: Family hearsay indicate James F was born in Ireland and left for St, John CAN in 1858, at the age of 15. It's not currently known whether he went alone, or with family. He's subsequent travels suggest it would not be out of character for him to have come alone. He married Katherine Driscoll in 1869 in St. John, CAN. James was an iron nailmaker -- in fact know as one of the best in St. John. Had a mill there, but thought things would be better in the US. Left CAN in 1873 for Aurora to get a job at the Cobb?????. Brought the rest of the family to Aurora in 1884. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1997, Probate Court of Jackson, OH. This was not a prosperous family (in terms of income). James travelled much to keep working in the trade and sent money home as he could. Was warmly welcomed when he got a chance to return home. Family letters state James forsaw the decline in the iron nailing industry and designed and built an iron stapler. Apparently, his invention and patent was stolen by someone else. Alas, the rest of the Staffords still have to work for a living!.

Known as an avid reader. In fact a reader of "good" books like El. Capitan, The Last Days of Pompei, and When Knighthood was in Power.

The old home was 107 Moore St in Aurora. This was the first block of homes from the Ohio River. My brother Jim Jr. and I visited Aurora in 2/2002. The entire block of homes at Moore Street has now been replaced by a grainery that utilized the river and rail.

CIVIL WAR RECORD OF WILLIAM A. PENN
William A. Penn served in Company C of the 6th Texas Cavalry Regiment
(also called the 2nd Regiment) which was or ganized with 1,150 men at
Dallas, Texas in September, 1861. Men from Dallas, McKinney, Waco,
Austin, Lancaster and Bell County formed the regiment. Contai ning over
eight hundred effectives in the spring of 1862, the unit skirmished in
the Indian Territory, fought at Elkhorn Tavern, then moved east of the
Mississippi River. By the summer of 1862 William Penn transferred to
Company H of Waul's Texas Legion. Containing a cavalry battalion and an
infantry regi ment, the legion did not serve as one command.
Perhaps anxious about his fate, William drafted his last will and
testament in February of 1863. In the docu ment he identified himself as a
farmer, "being in good health, and of sound a nd disposing memory". He
bequeathed all of his property, "both personal and m ixed", to his
"beloved wife Sarah Elizabeth Penn". In the event of her death, he
stipulated that assets of his estate would be inherited by their
childr en: John Wesley, James William, Robert Gilmore and Nancy Ann.
As a member of C . C. Stone's Texas Cavalry, William was captured at Port
Hudson, Louisiana on June 14, 1863, just four months after he had
composed his will. He became a prisoner of war. Although the date of his
dismissal is not recorded, William did return to combat. He served as a
private of Company C, Chisum's Regiment, Lane's Brigade, Texas Cavalry.
On October 22, 1864, he was killed in action at Hurricane Creek, near
Little Rock, Arkansas.

The Dallas Weekly Herald recorded his death:
The deceased was born on the 18th day of August, 1829, in the county of
St. Clair, State of Illinois, and emigrated to Texas in the year 1858
(sic).
When the tocasin (sic) of war was sounded and his beloved South called
its gallant sons to rally to its defense (sic), he promptly responded. He
tore himself from his wife and little children and volunteered in the
re giment organized by Col. B. Warren Stone.
At the battle of Donaldsonville, La. , June 15th, 1863, he was taken
prisoner. Exchanged soon after, he served for the army of Virginia until
an opportunity offered itself to return to his re giment. He participated
in the victories gained last Spring by our gallant ar my in Louisiana, and
distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry. At the b attle at
Hurricane Creek, when the order to charge was given, he was in the f ront
rank and fell pierced by several bullets.
He was beloved by his comrade s, highly esteemed by the officers for his
manly virtures, his devotion to hi s duties, and for his gallant conduct.
His memory will forever be cherished b y his regiment.
He was buried near the town of Benton, by the ladies from the
neighborhood of the battlefield, and many a tear fell on the grave of our
l amented friend and comrade, from the eyes of noble women, who although
strangers, lamented in him the loss of a noble soldier who sacrificed his
life in t he defence (sic) of their homes. A stone was erected over his
grave, with his name inscribed on the same, to show future generations
the last resting plac e of a gallant defender of the South and its
cherished institutions.

"My husband is Jim Burris. He is the grandson of Augustus (Gus) Adolphus Burris born on March 10, 1879 in Stockdale, Wilson Co. Texas. Gus is the son of J.B. Burris & Ava Mills.

On Oct. 28, 1896 he married Mary Frances Stafford who was born on April 15, 1882 in Stockdale, Wilson County, Texas. Mary was the daughter of William Sumpter Stafford & Mary Catherine Broadway.

Gus died on June 18, 1961. Both Gus & Mary are buried in Stockdale. They lived many years near Sequin, where Gus had a blacksmith’s shop, and he traveled as an implement salesman.

Gus and Mary had 13 children, one of them was Luther E. Burris who was my husband's dad. My husband lived with his grandparents, Gus & Mary for a short time.

Grandma Mary was the grand-daughter of William Arch (probably Archibald) Stafford who was born about 1826 in Alabama and belonged to the Coushatta Indian Tribe. There is a group of the Alabama-Coushatta Indians located in Texas on a reservation 17 miles east of Livingston, Texas. There is a picture of William in full dress of a chief in the possession of one of the great grandchildren, but has not been located.

William Arch Stafford was in the Marines in the Civil War and was stationed in Galveston, Texas. He is buried in Calvert, Texas.

William married Mary Emerson, who was also born in Alabama. They had 4 children. Mary Emerson Stafford died in 1865 and is buried in Montgomery County, Alabama. After Mary’s death, William (called Billy) remarried and moved to West Texas.

We obtained this information from Jim's Aunt Dorthey Catherine Burris-Sells. As of June 19, 2011, she is the only surviving child from the 13 children of Mary Francis Stafford and Gus Adolphus Burris. She is 90 years old and lives in San Antonio, Texas.

We have more detailed information and if you would like to correspond with us regarding our family history, you can reach me at my regular email address. Our email address is: [email protected] "

Linda & Jim Burris
