104151 | OBITUARY--STAFFORD Died, at his home northeast of Woodstock, on Wednesday, Nov 23, 1892, J.P. Stafford, in the 77th year of his age. Jacob P. Stafford was born in the state of New York, Otseka county, Jan 2, 1816. He was married Dec. 25, 1839 to Sarah A. Smith, who still survives him. During 53 years of married life Mr. and Mrs. Stafford have walked side by side and borne the burdens of life together. Besides the wife, four daughters mourn a father's loss, Mrs. R A. Johnson, of Seneca, Mrs. David Duffield, of Abingdon, Ill., Mrs. Ralph Bush, of McHenry, and Mrs. M.E. Hitchcock, of Woodstock. Mr. Stafford and wife and two daughters moved to Illinois in 1854 and settled in Seneca, near Franklinville where he lived until about seven years ago when he rented his farm and moved to Woodstock. He was among the earliest settlers of the county and until his health failed him was a hard-working and industrious farmer. Deceased was in usual health and was reading the following "poem" from the weekly Inter Ocean of Nov 17, when the messenger came: AS THE YEARS ROLL ON As the years roll on, As the years roll on, Oh, they closer cleave together As the years roll on. Though the union of this couple, has endured for fifty years, Through all life's strage vicissitudes, their trials, smiles and tears, though oft their sun was clouded o'ver, When hope seemed nearly gone, Yet they love each other better As the years roll on. As the years roll on, As the years roll on, they grow dearer to each other As the years roll on. O'er half a century ago John told the old, old story, So often said, yet always new, To beauty in her glory, and then she blushed and turned her head, Nor dared to say "I'm won," And their courting days continue As the years roll on. As the years roll on, As the years roll on, Oh, they closer grow, and dearer, As the years roll on. Oh, glorious is the summer sun When sinking in the West, And glorious are declining years, Blessing and being blessed And glorious are the hopes of two whom love has made but one! While they near the better country As the years roll on. As the years roll on, As the years roll on, They get nearer to the Father As the years roll on. The funeral services were held from this late home last week Friday, the Rev. F.R.. McNamer officiating, and the remains were laid at rest in Oakland cemetery. 104160 | OBITUARY-THE JOURNAL MONDAY, MAY 17, 1909 MRS. ARMSTRONG CLAIMED BY DEATH ARMSTRONG-Died at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, May 16, 1909 at the family residence, 827 South Fifth St, after a lingering illness, Mrs. Olive Eggleston Armstrong, aged 57 years. The decedent is survived by her husband, Charles A. Armstrong, and her mother, Mrs. Phoebe Priest, besides other relatives. The decedent was born May 2, 1852 at Rochester, Ill., and was the daughter of J. W. Priest, formerly Mrs. Sadie Eggleston. For a number of years she was a registered letter clerk in the post office of this city. Ten years ago she was married to Charles A. Armstrong. She was well known in this city being a member of the Springfield Woman's Club. There are many more to mourn the untimely demise of this gentle sufferer than the immediate relatives and friends. As Miss Ollie Eggleston and as Mrs. Charles A. Armstrong the departed soul filled a place upon earth which is too seldom filled as well. Without realizing it herself, probably she impressed those with whom she mingled as what might be termed an apostle of cheerfulness. Mrs. Armstrong enjoyed a much wider range of acquaintance than befalls the lot of the average matron, due to several years of association in business matters while filling a clerical position in the post office. Business associations developed friendships for her to a greater extent than is realized by the average individual because of her ever-obliging, genial and whole-souled character of her nature. She always displayed a cheerful and kindly disposition which made lasting impressions upon all who came in contact with her. In the postal service, as Miss Eggleston, she soon became familiarly known and accosted by all her associates, and many of the patrons of the office, as "Ollie". The familiarity thus displayed was indictive of the warm personal regard show for Miss Eggleston by her associates, and her democratic instincts made it natural for her not to resent as impertinence what was really a high compliment, typifying deep personal regard. The same geniality of disposition and democratic tendency, characterizing the nature of Mrs. Armstrong throughout the following years of her life, added many personal friends to her list and cemented many friendships thus formed. Interment will be in the Rochester cemetery. Pallbearers will be E. A. Helmle, H. C. Reman, E. R. Armstrong, J. P. Latham, Lee Matheny, all of this city, and C. M. Samson of Quincy, Ill., a nephew of the decedent. | EGGLESTON, Olive (I123096)
