Stafford, who was killed by accidental discharge of a grenade, was a warning that saved the lives of several of his companions. This is stated in a letter from France written by his Captain, James D. Cozby of the Fifty-First Infantry. It was received by Stafford's sister, Mrs. C. L. Willett, 1112 Baltimore Avenue. "Corporal Stafford was universally respected and admired for his upright Christian manhood, the letter states. He was a man on whom I could rely at all times to do his duty, and was on my list for promotion at the time of his death. His last thought was of his companions, for when he saw that an explosion was coming, he cried out to his men in warning in time to save several lives that otherwise would have been lost." He seemed to be a slight, gentle man to me with red hair and only half a nose. He always seemed happy to see me. I know he lived and died in the little room behind what Granny called the back porch. I was really sad when he died. He called me Anner Girl just like Granddaddy always did. I don't know if I really remember the rope to the outhouse or I just think I do. He seemed content with his existence. It seemed to me Granny kept him shut away in his room too much. Other than that I don't remember a lot about him. He just seemed like a quiet, gentle, sweet man.
