113703 | Stated to have been known in his youth by the surname, Floyd. Succeeded to the Barony of Stafford, on the death of his cousin's grandson Henry Stafford, 4 Aug 1637. On the King's order, on account of his "very mean and obscure condition", etc, surrendered his claim to the Barony, for the sum of 800 pounds. Died an old man at Arundel House being the last male heir, being kept there to prevent his marrying. Roger may be the father of Thomas Stafford b. 1605 who immigrated to Plymouth, Massachusetts and then Rhode Island. Roger Stafford, b.c. 1572 who claimed the Barony on death of Henry 5th Baron in 1637, but was denied [ unjustly by King Charles I] on account of his poverty, died unmarried in 1640. [One report suggests that he was kept prisoner in Arundel Castle to prevent him from marrying] [the denial may have been engineered by the Howards who quickly married William to Mary S [21.2] [In his youth he used the name of Fludd or Floyde apparently because he was ashamed of the way the Barons had behaved and this is possibly why Hugh Henry Flood [26.5] chose the name] [see ref at end] | STAFFORD, Roger 15th Baron Stafford (I38613)
