John Stafford 40 IN, Nancy 40, Joshua 20, Maria 17, Mathew 14, Elizabeth 11, Charles 9, Mary 7, George 5, John 2. 1860 Indiana Census states John was born in KY. John was in Indiana until he departed prior to the 1880 IN census, Barr TWP, Daviess County. There were no Staffords found in the 1880 Daviess census. He owned property in Barr until that time. There may be a will on file. His wife Nancy probably died around 1860 [approx. age 50]. John was a Republican & a member of the Christin Church for 43 years. In the 1870 Indiana census Julia A. Stafford was keeping house, Emma Stafford [I/J] age 12, Sarah age 19, Sarah E. age 22, Anderson W. Age 10 and Ennis age 2 are at the home. Nancy is a daughter of Thomas Berris Sr. Born 1770 [census spelling but Burress in other places] and sister to Thomas Jr. and Jessie, families that lived close to the Barr Staffords. Ralph Lee Stafford Some family information has Reverend attached to his name. The 1850 Indiana census states he was born in VA and the 1860 IN census states he was born in KY and 1900 KS census states he was born in VA. Also his birth year is 1810 or 1811. I found him and Nancy Burress in the LDS family ancestry computer database and it stated they were both born in Knox County Indiana, which later became Daviess County. John was a farmer & raised blooded horses. John lived in Alfordsville, IN for a time. I think John left Indiana prior to the 1880 census and moved to Peru Kansas. 1880 Indiana Census: No Staffords found. John [I assume Julie and her son David also moved to Kansas because they show up in the census] and his sons, Joshua, and Mathew and Mathew's wife, Hannah Alford, came to Chautauqua County Kansas. Later his son Charles [Martha also?] and Charles son Joshua moved to Chautauqua County, Kansas to be near Matthew and John. In 1880 John's son Matthew bought a home joining his north of Peru, Kansas. 1885 Census Chautauqua County Belleville Twp Kansas, page 47, line 1 J Stafford 73, born in Kent., came from Indiana J.A. 44, born in Kent., came from Indiana D.A. 14, born in Ind., came from Indiana. John and Mathew Stafford are buried in the Peru Cemetery, Peru Kansas and Matthew died from tuberculosis. There are other Burress family members buried in the Peru Cemetery Peru, Kansas. As a private he took part in a number of engagements in the Black Swamp region on South Carolina which lies between the Savannah River and Charleston.
